Not Just for Display
I want my finished pieces to be functional. I want the purchasers to use them for drinking their morning coffee, eating lunch, serving food, spooning ice cream. With this in mind, I am very conscientious of food safety. While swirling many different colored glazes inside a piece can make it appear more beautiful, it can potentially make it harmful due to the chemical reactions happening between the glazes as they are fired. I don’t want my customers to have to worry about this.
Each of the pieces I make that could be used for food have only one food safe glaze added to the inside and rim, where food might touch. I only use lead free glazes labeled as food safe. On the rare occasion where multiple colors are seen inside, I am using a celadon glaze that is completely mixable and may be layered without jeopardizing food safety.
