The eggs are spherical or elliptical in most land species and are covered with a calcareous shell, and in marine and some freshwater species they are covered with a leathery shell. The incubation period is usually 2-3 months (for the elephant turtle 6-7 months). Sexual maturity occurs at the age of 2-3 years.
