Turtles are common in tropical and temperate climate zones almost throughout the Earth. Ecologically, they are divided into marine and terrestrial, and terrestrial, in turn, into land and freshwater.

Some species can have up to 3 or more clutches per year. The eggs are spherical or elliptical in most land species and are covered with a calcareous shell, and in marine and some freshwater species they are covered with a leathery shell. The incubation period is usually 2-3 months (for the elephant turtle 6-7 months). Sexual maturity occurs at the age of 2-3 years.
