As Joliet, Illinois, battles a water scarcity issue for drinking water, it was also battling an abundance of stormwater stressing facility capacity. The Joliet Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel and Wet Weather Treatment Facility aimed to make this issue a matter for the past.

Allison Swisher, Joliet director of public utilities, describes the community served and why the project was important. Troy Stinson, project manager for Strand Associates, explains the size and scope of the project. And Phil Bzdusek, lead project engineer for Strand Associates, explains how the tunnel aspect was adapted during construction and the logistical challenges involved. Additional talking points include discussion of the horizontal hydraulic deflection screen and shoutouts for the many stakeholders involved in the project.

Owner: City of Joliet, Illinois, Government
Designers: Strand Associates, GZA GeoEnvironmental

We send a big Thank You to Magnovo Training Group and Midwest Mole, Inc.for making and donating Rescue Buddies to the Greenfield Police Dept. at Midwest Mole's company gathering last night.

Rescue Buddies are stuffed friends that we give to kids in times of crisis to help them stay calm and keep their mind off of what is going on.

Each Rescue Buddy is stuffed by hand and given a heart that is initialed by the stuffer.

We are thankful to Magnovo Training Group and Midwest Mole for thinking of us and, more importantly, the kids in our community that will receive these great new Buddies!
HUGE SHOUT OUT TO OUR FRIENDS at Midwest Mole, Inc.

You don't get to where we are today as a company without teamwork and trust playing a considerable role in your success.

We know that the only way to function as a field-first company is through the individual actions of our entire team, collectively working towards a common goal.

Everyone, from office to shop, keeps our moles digging together.

Choosing the right drill bit for your ground conditions is crucial before any drilling ever occurs.

The wrong choice might eventually get the job done, but it will also lengthen your drilling time, decrease productivity and expose your equipment to unnecessary wear and tear.

Putting the finishing touches on this receiving pit on a recent project.

A receiving pit is an excavated opening located at the exit point for the trenchless equipment/ pipe to hole out into.

Receiving pits are minor excavations compared to digging open trenches along the entire length of pipe installation.

Fusion involves the simultaneous heating of the ends of two separate pipes in order to join them together. The two ends are heated until a molten state is attained on each contact surface. They are then brought together under controlled pressure for a specific cooling time and a homogeneous fusion joint is formed.

Aligning and clamping the pipes. Butt fusion welding is the name given to hot plate welding of thermoplastic pipes. It is one of two main techniques for the fusion joining of polyethylene gas and water pipe.

This process is commonly used in polyolefin pipes (such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and polybutylene).

Heavy hauling is necessary to transport oversized loads on public roads. In our industry, this is commonplace for many different types of equipment or materials.

Heavy haul refers to oversized or overweight trucking shipments that exceed standard legal limits for transporting freight.

A shipment requires heavy haul services if it exceeds a:

Width of 8.6 feet
Height of 13.6 feet
Length of 48 to 53 feet
Gross weight of 80,000 pounds

At Midwest Mole Transport, our team knows the guidelines and can get us safely, quickly, and efficiently from point A to point B.

Down inside the bore pit, a conveyor belt system removes the spoil from the cutter head.

Once the spoil reaches the pipe jacking area, it's lifted from the pit and hauled off.

This entire process is handled by several different points of contact by our team, all working seamlessly together and in communication to keep production flowing smoothly throughout the bore.

An HDD rig is comprised of several components. The main element is called a drill rig.

The rig includes storage where drill rods are prepared. The operator will link drill rods together to form a drill string for advancing the drill bit.

Behind the drill bit, there is a sonde housing that exerts a signal. The signal will be picked up by another technician equipped with a transmitter-receiver to trace the location. The data is processed to inform the operator on the rig who navigates and directs the drilling.

A tank and pump are also utilized to supply drilling fluid to the rig. This is to ensure that drilling fluid is continuously circulated throughout the drilling process.

A newer underground method in the industry is hydro excavation.

This process of removing soil uses pressurized water to create a dirt slurry instead of mechanical tools.

Hydrovac equipment can then vacuum the slurry to reveal deeper layers of the ground below.

Crews commonly use this technique to uncover existing utility lines and pipe systems with minimal risk of breaks or tears.

This steel box is a critical safety device that protects our Moles in the event of a cave-in. The first stage of HDD consists of drilling a small diameter pilot hole with a cutting drill bit.

Drilling fluid is pumped through the drill pipe to the drill bit where high-pressure jets along with the bit will grind the soils ahead of the drill stem.

During this process, the drilling fluid will carry the cuttings back to the entrance pit at the drill rig.

Why choose HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) over other methods?

1. Ability to install underground installation of utilities with minimum surface disruption.

2. Costs are relatively lower with greater installation depth.

3. A deeper installation = less chance of damaging existing underground utilities.

4. Less equipment, manpower, and fuel are needed per meter of installation.

5. There are lower surface restoration costs and economic costs caused by road closures.

Our Story

Midwest Mole has been in the boring, jacking, and tunneling business since 1982. We have the necessary experience, personnel, equipment, and resources to perform almost any type of tunneling work with a staff of 75-90 employees and combined supervisory experience of over 450 years. Midwest Mole has performed projects of various lengths and diameters in all types of ground conditions using a variety of means and methods. We have established good working relationships with clients across the nation having the resources to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of owners, contractors, and their customers. We aim to maintain our reputation as a leader in the industry by approaching each job with integrity and dedication.

Founder Len Liotti, a Purdue University Engineering graduate, recognized the opportunity in the local market when Affholder Inc and next Armco Steel’s construction division closed their doors leaving a void in the market. By investing in knowledgeable and dedicated employees and providing good leadership, Len was able to lay the groundwork for a successful underground contracting company. Initially a small auger boring operation serving customers within only a five hour driving range, Midwest Mole now utilizes various means of installation that have evolved over the years and has expanded the geographical area to serve customers all over the nation.
