We’re so honored to have the In Living Color space open throughout our conference for a third year! There is also a BIPoC community class this year on The 411 on Operating a Successful, Compliant & Ethical Herbal Business.
This space was created and will be facilitated by Amanda David and Mandana Boushee, who’re both herbalists and incredible leaders dedicated to dismantling systems of oppression and sharing herbalism from a decolonial framework.
You may know Amanda and Mandana from their schools and or their transformative course for non-BIPOC herbalists called Woke Without the Work for those seeking to move beyond optical support and towards active and embodied practices of equity. This a virtual course that we HIGHLY recommend to all non-BIPOC herbalists and herbal product makers.
This In Living Color digital space is meant to center the needs and voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. It’s designed by and for BIPOC participants, providing a refuge for people to gather, connect, rest, and share in the celebration of lineages and lived experiences. It’s also a place for BIPOC participants to access emotional and energetic support throughout the duration of the conference.
We're beyond grateful for all the incredible work these two do in the world and so grateful for this space at the conference. Join us for the conference, happening tomorrow ❤️❤️❤️

Good herbal product formulation and sourcing are critical for plant conservation. In this session, we’ll talk about how to evaluate the botanicals going into your products and share some tools and resources to ensure that your supply is sustainable so your herbal products are good for people and planet.
This talk will be led by an industry leader, whose work we're beyond inspired by, Susan Leopold, Ph.D. Susan is an ethnobotanist and a passionate defender of biodiversity. Over the past 20 years, Susan has worked extensively with indigenous peoples in Peru and Costa Rica. She is the Executive Director of United Plant Savers and Director of the Sacred Seeds Project.
Prior to working at United Plant Savers, she worked as a librarian at the Oak Spring Garden Library, specializing in digitizing rare herbals and botanical travel manuscripts. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Botanical Dimensions and the Center for Sustainable Economy.
She is an advisory board member of the American Botanical Council. She is a proud member of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia and the author of the children's book Isabella's Peppermint Flower. She lives on and manages a productive farm, the Indian Pipe Botanical Sanctuary with her three children in Virginia. She is an avid recreational tree climber, in love with the canopy just as much as the herbs of the forest floor.
Join in on this powerful conversation! Come live or recorded to this year's conference, happening tomorrow ❤️❤️❤️

Worried about product safety and stability? Wondering about lab testing but not sure where to start? Getting control of your product identity and regularly testing for contaminates is a big responsibility as a business, and it can be confusing to understand where to start. Amanda is an expert in this space and will walk us through where to begin and how to navigate testing on a budget.
Amanda Vickers Souther (she/they) is a conservation biologist, medicinal plant chemist, and self-trained formulator of natural products. For ten years, she ran a non-profit laboratory serving the global natural products industry and helping herbal product companies meet US FDA testing and regulatory requirements. She currently co-owns a natural body care company Mountains to Sea, consults with herbal companies at Pop Horticulture, and tends an Appalachian urban homestead with her husband and daughter near Asheville, NC.
