Interior Design and Abstract Art

05/30/2026

There is a difference between a room that looks good and a room that actually supports the way someone lives.

That is what this week’s conversation with Eryn Oruncak of Elan Design is all about.

We got into neuroaesthetics, the science behind how our spaces affect the brain, the nervous system, our emotions, and even the way we move through a day.

Here is what I kept coming back to.
Interior design is not just about creating something beautiful. It is about creating a space that helps someone feel clearer, calmer, more grounded, and more at home in their own life.

Sometimes that looks like reducing clutter. Sometimes it is the right material. Sometimes it is finally understanding why a room feels unfinished even when all the pieces are technically there.

And sometimes it is just asking a better question. How is this room serving the client?

That one question can change the way you design, the way you talk about your value, and the way your clients understand what you are actually doing for them.

You are not just picking pillows (tho fun to do). You are creating an environment that shapes how someone feels every single day.

Recently, I hosted a private dinner with brand leaders from across the luxury home sector for a private audience with Dr. Anjan Chatterjee, Founding Director of the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics.

The evening was anchored by two perspectives.

Dr. Anjan Chatterjee brought clarity to the science of neuroaesthetics, how our brains and bodies respond to experiencing the aesthetics of people, places, and things. My role focused on translating that science into its application to luxury interior design.

I focused on what applying neuroaesthetics to interior design means in a real day-to-day practice, the conversations that happen across all of the different parties involved in creating environments, and the elevated tailoring of the spaces we deliver. My clients come to me asking for alignment and transformation. They trust in my expertise as a designer and are now selecting Elan Design because of my application of neuroaesthetics to their projects.

Tremendous gratitude to Kravet, JANUS et Cie, and Benjamin Moore for joining me and Anjan in Philadelphia. This was an intimate, in-depth meeting among these leaders who are serious about understanding the science of neuroaesthetics, its application to formulating spaces, how their products best serve their customers and our clients, and the advancement of the interior design profession.

What remains clear is that our brand partners rely on design professionals as much as we rely on them.

Neuroaesthetics is not a design trend. It is a shift in how we understand the purpose of the home. Elan Design is dedicated to applying neuroaesthetics to interior design correctly, without sales jargon or empty words. Only in this way does it promise to elevate our design concepts, market luxury products, serve our clients, and build our businesses.

I am continually grateful to Anjan Chatterjee for his brilliance and leadership in defining and researching neuroaesthetics. It was an honor to sit beside him in helping these global brand leaders gain accurate knowledge of the science from the one who I consider the source.

More to come.

Sharing all our love from a magical Christmas Eve. Beginning with mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral to 7 fish dinner at Cafe Milano . Schedules were tight this year so we had a zoom with Santa 🎅 on our way into town… just in time for presents under the tree.

Merry Christmas from all of us. 🎁🎄 ♥️

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of spending 4 hours in a private masterclass with Anjan Chatterjee, the world leader in the science of neuroaesthetics research. He’s been pioneering this field for over 25 years and is the source for accurate, science-backed knowledge on how environments affect our brains and nervous system.

As my speaking and advisory roles in neuroaesthetics in interior design grow, I wanted to make sure that what I share is sound and true. Anjan emphasized the importance of keeping the “neuro” in neuroaesthetics, refined my terminology, and debunked information I had previously encountered. This elevated my understanding of how this science truly benefits interior design.

The power of neuroaesthetics in design is real, but as Anjan said: “You have to get it right.”

Please join Jennifer Farrell , Ericka Saurit and me, where we’ll talk in depth about how to apply neuroaesthetics to interior design. I’ll be sharing key take-aways I gained from Anjan.

A year after the deck was built, the seating area remained empty. We transformed it into a functional, welcoming outdoor space with comfortable seating, layered textiles, and ambient lighting.

It was a well-loved area this summer. The best part is that this outdoor living space will continue to serve the family weekend coffee, evening cocktails, and quality time together even as we say farewell to summer.

What’s your must-have for the perfect outdoor retreat?

My dedication to the power of interior design is the reason for my passion for neuroaesthetics. I truly believe that having this science-backed evidence for what interior designers do will change the way people think about their spaces… and elevate the professionals who create them.

I’ve been invited to speak as the leading interior design expert in neuroaesthetics at the first webinar for the Science In Design Webinar Series.

Don Ruggles is an OG in the world of neuroaesthetics, and is a faculty member of the SIDC Certification Course. He has truly taught me so much about the subject and it’s an honor that Mike Peterson, Science in Design, paired us in conversation to launch this new series.

If you are interested in neuroaesthetics,
THIS is the talk to come to.

Did you know 95% of your responses to your surroundings are subconscious? That means your home is impacting your mood, stress levels, focus, and even your relationships before you’re even aware of it.

I don’t just create beautiful rooms. I design spaces that support mental clarity, emotional regulation, better sleep, stronger relationships, and even financial success.

Elan Design residences and offices perform like silent wellness coaches.

This isn’t luxury for luxury’s sake, it’s luxury with purpose. A defined, thoughtful, deliberate purpose.

Your environment can heal, uplift, and empower you. And when it does? Everything in your life improves.

Link in bio to read our latest blog, 3 Ways to Decorate Your Home to Bring Peace. Highlights include:

- Nature heals (even in photo form).

- The hardest working element in a room.

- The textures you choose do double duty with your emotional and physical happiness.

Which one do you lean on the most when you decorate? Which one are you excited to try?

I truly believe that our space has an incredible influence on our person. Goals, the connection to family and friends, how we think and feel, even I dare say how successful we are. As designers start to incorporate neuroaesthetics into our practice, we will better communicate our decisions and value to our clients.

Please join Jennifer Farrell, Ericka Saurit, and me at The Point on Sunday at 10am to learn the basics of neuroaesthetics. Let’s get the YES!! 🙌

Special thanks to High Point Market Authority, and our Sponsors Elan Design, Science in Design, Phillips Collection, Feizy Rugs, and Visual Comfort & Co.

Looking forward to seeing you! ♥️

As an interior design firm owner deeply invested in the power of neuroaesthetics, I’m honored to moderate the “Made to Matter” panel at the upcoming Designing Wellbeing Symposium this Spring High Point Market. Together with Michael Bauer of Feizy Rugs, Mark Phillips of Phillips Collection, and Alejandra Thompson de Jordan of Thompson Traders, we’ll be exploring their perspectives from the manufacturers’ side in creating beautiful, successful spaces.

The excitement on our pre-panel call was palpable. These industry leaders, especially, believe in the scientific foundations of how beauty, neuroaesthetics, and biophilic design contribute to overall wellbeing. It’s a must-attend for anyone interested in learning about the science of what we do as an industry, and the power we hold in creating environments for our clients. There’s still time to sign up.

My heartfelt gratitude to Jane Dagmi and Mike Peterson for including me in this very special event.

Visit hpxd.org/events for the full symposium schedule and to register.
