Northwestern Medicine and Google Team Up to Improve Maternal-Fetal Medicine Outcomes With AI Ultrasound Technology

Part of being a new parent is taking countless photos of your child. A Northwestern Medicine study is letting new parents photograph their children before they are even born to help improve health outcomes for people who are pregnant and newborns across the world.

Northwestern Medicine and Google are collaborating on a project to bring fetal ultrasound to developing countries by combining artificial intelligence (AI), low-cost hand-held ultrasound devices and a smartphone.

The goal of this project is to develop algorithms that interpret ultrasound images to improve the health of both the parent and baby. With AI, people who are pregnant and others can perform fetal ultrasounds at home, with little to no training, to see if they may need additional maternal-fetal care.

The first step in this project is developing the algorithms with help from patients at Northwestern Medicine, like Megan Augustyniak, who is shown here performing her own ultrasound with a low-cost hand-held device.

There are 300,000 maternal deaths each year, most of which occur in lower- and middle-income countries. This project aims to bring better maternal-fetal medical care closer to where patients live and work around the world.

Pediatric patients at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital had the opportunity to play clinician during the fifth annual Teddy Bear Clinic.

Children in the outpatient oncology clinic and inpatient pediatrics unit were gifted a plush friend equipped with a stethoscope, medicine cups, syringes, gauze and everything else they may need to provide their new friend with medical care.

Child life specialists run the Teddy Bear Clinic at Central DuPage Hospital with the goal of engaging young patients in medical play to help reduce some of the fears and worries they may experience during a hospital visit. The Teddy Bear Clinic teaches kids about the medical supplies they may encounter during healthcare visits and also gives them the opportunity to have some fun during a challenging time.

“I love being able to sit with these kids and giving them an outlet to use their imagination and be creative while we’re doing medical play,” says Child Life Intern Hannah Windhorn, coordinator for this year’s event. “You can see how confident it makes them feel when they get to touch and play with the medical supplies they see daily.”
