In a conversation this week, my husband made a statement recently that stuck with me:

"If you're hiring only for cost, you're probably not investing for revenue."

That perspective changed the way I think about talent.

Too often, organizations ask, "How much will this person cost?"

A better question might be: "How much value can this person create?"

Every KPI, customer interaction, innovation, and growth initiative is driven by people. The right hire doesn't just fill a seat. They improve performance, strengthen culture, create opportunities, and contribute to revenue.

Talent is not simply an expense to manage.

It's one of the most important investments a company can make.

The question isn't what talent costs. The question is what talent creates.

The journey from Egypt to the Promised Land should have taken Israel about 11 days.

Instead, it took 40 years. Not because the destination was unclear.

But because the people weren't ready to enter it. I've often wondered how many organizations experience the same thing.

A project that should take months takes years.
A team that should be growing stays stagnant.
An organization keeps circling the same problems.

Sometimes the issue isn't strategy. Sometimes it's leadership.

When promotions are driven by familiarity, politics, tenure, or personal bias rather than character, attitude, and capability, progress slows.

Leadership roles are not rewards. They are responsibilities.
The right person can accelerate an entire team.
The wrong person can unintentionally keep everyone wandering in circles.

One leadership decision can determine whether a team reaches its destination efficiently, or spends years taking unnecessary detours.

Sometimes the difference between 11 days and 40 years is simply having the right people in the right seats at the right time.

What are your thoughts? Have you seen leadership decisions accelerate, or delay, an organization's growth?

Leadership positions are not rewards.

They are responsibilities.

When promotions are driven by bias, familiarity, or tenure instead of character, attitude, and capability, organizations often pay the price.

Leadership decisions don't just fill positions. They determine trajectory.

The right person in the right seat can save years of detours.

The Crab Bucket Effect

Have you ever noticed that a single crab can often climb out of a bucket on its own?

But when several crabs are in the bucket together, something strange happens. As one starts to escape, the others pull it back down.

No lid required. The crabs keep each other trapped.

This has become known as the "Crab Bucket Effect," and it shows up in life, leadership, and business more often than we'd like to admit.

A colleague gets promoted.
A friend starts a business.
Someone writes a book, changes careers, loses weight, or takes a bold step forward.

Instead of celebrating their growth, people sometimes criticize, discourage, or minimize their success.

Not because the achievement is bad. But because it exposes what they have not pursued themselves.

Growth has a way of revealing complacency. The tragedy is that everyone loses.
The person climbing becomes discouraged. The people pulling remain stuck.
And the entire group stays in the bucket.

Scripture offers a different path:

"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." — Romans 12:15

Healthy leaders understand that someone else's success is not a threat.

Strong cultures are built when people help one another climb, not when they compete to keep everyone at the same level.

The question is simple:

When someone around you starts climbing, do you pull them back into the bucket...Or do you help push them higher?

Because the people who rise the furthest are often the ones who spend the most time helping others climb.

The offer letter isn't the finish line.

Too often, companies invest heavily in evaluating candidates but very little in preparing them to succeed once they arrive.

Great hires don't just need opportunity.
They need alignment, clarity, development, and support.

Performance doesn't start on Day 1—it starts before it.

At Simple Hire, we believe hiring should be:

Align → Prepare → Place → Develop

Because when people are prepared to succeed, teams perform at a higher level.

People don’t thrive because of systems alone.
They thrive when leadership creates clarity, trust, development, and genuine investment in people.

Strong cultures are built person by person, and the harvest always shows it.

Alan Weschler recently framed a tension many organizations are experiencing but few are articulating.

We extend patience and courtesy to machines, while interrupting the very people who serve, support, and build our organizations.

Algorithms are being trained to simulate empathy.
Meanwhile, professionals are increasingly expected to operate without it.

This is the paradox of artificial empathy.

At Simple Hire, we embrace AI as a powerful accelerator of speed and efficiency.
But we are equally clear on what it cannot replace.

AI does not create discernment.
It does not develop people.
And it does not build cultures that endure.

Those outcomes remain deeply human.

Our focus is not simply on placing talent, but on cultivating performance, through alignment, coaching, and intentional development.

The organizations that will lead in this next era will not choose between AI and people.
They will integrate both, without losing sight of the human value that drives long-term results.

05/05/2026

AI is changing the speed of hiring, but not the substance of it.

Anyone can generate a list of candidates now. That’s not the advantage anymore. The real edge is discernment. Knowing who can actually execute. Who aligns with the mission. Who will grow, not just start.

Because performance isn’t found in data alone. It’s built through people, coaching, and intentional development.

The future isn’t AI vs humans.
It’s AI-powered… human-led.

That’s the difference between hiring…and building something that lasts.
