The dark side of “From Away” 05/11/2021

“But “From Away” doesn’t add anything; it’s not cute and it’s not harmless. It just sets up a division of those who belong vs. those who supposedly don’t.”

The dark side of “From Away” The...Other. That boogeyman that exists only to blame stuff on or to unload on. Not a scary monster in the closet but the neighbor you can point to in accusation. The “Other” is a convenient tool for blame or to make yourself feel superior or to deflect an argument that isn’t going your way or

Please Don't Wear A Sombrero: What Cinco De Mayo Really Means, From A Mexican The real tragedy for me is that a day that once represented Black and brown solidarity -- and resistance against colonialism -- has been mired by a commercial whitewashing, writes Maria Garcia.

ACTION ITEM from Helen Sturgis-Bright with Unity Runners!
https://unityrunners.com/action-steps

Right now in the Maine state legislature, there are two bills that will be going to be before the committee of Criminal Justice and Public Safety on April 26th at 10am.

We are now at the stage where we need YOU!!

We need to hear your voice as to why it matters to you that we create a safer more equitable Maine. We are looking to collect written or spoken testimony to ensure Maine passes a bill that will abolish both No-Knock warrants and No-Knock Raids and ‘dynamic entry,’ which are much more harmful (and used more often) for civilians.
We, among others, are working with Representative Roeder on amending LD1127 to fully abolish No-Knock Raids in Maine, making our state more equitable and safe for citizens and law enforcement.
However, LD 1171, does nothing to make Maine a safer state and prevent unnecessary deaths like that of Breonna Taylor. You can read more research here: https://tinyurl.com/MENKResearch

We are wondering if you would be interested or know of folks who would be interested in testifying either via public comment or via writing?

If you think you or others would need help with testimony writing & delivery you/they can join us
Saturday 4/24 at 10 am-10:30 or Sunday 4/25 at 6pm-6:30pm
for a testimony-writing/creating workshop where you can learn more about the process:
