RED SHOVELER (Spatula platalea). Easily recognized by its broad, “cuchera”-shaped bill, it’s one of 4 shoveler species worldwide—and among the 10 Spatula species. Inhabits shallow lakes, lagoons, and estuaries from Argentina to Chile. Drakes are reddish with pale cheeks and dark spots; females are mottled brown. Using their specialized bills, they filter seeds, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates from the water’s surface.
