A huge THANK YOU to the Goleta city council for approving the renovation of the Barnsdall service station, and to all the folks that sent emails in support of the Sandpiper project.
Next stop, the Coastal Commission....

Today is the day that the Goleta city council will hopefully be approving the Sandpiper project! Here is a cool aerial of the golf course under construction in 1972. If you look real close, you can find the Barnsdall Rio Grande station. It's unique shadow gives it away.

We are getting very close to saving this building forever!
Tuesday, June 2nd, at 5:30 pm at Goleta City Hall, 130 Cremona Drive will be the final hearing with the City of Goleta, and if it passes, they will move on to the California Coastal Commission.
It would be very helpful to attend the hearing, speak if you want and submit a short but sweet email of support before the meeting.
To make sure your comments are included in the public record, please send your email of support to:

(please mention Sandpiper in your email subject)
-Suggested things to mention in your email-----------
- Creating a much more environmentally sensitive course, reducing the irrigation by 50% and removing old school pesticides.
- Replace existing turf with native and drought-tolerant landscaping.
- Under-grounding power lines and adding bike and hiking trails all around the course.
- A beautiful new place to enjoy a meal with an amazing ocean view.
- The project removes outdated septic systems and connects to the sewer system.
- Of course, restoring and preserving the historic Barnsdall Rio Grande Gas Station.
- Overall, the project balances environmental restoration, recreation, historic preservation and community access and the developer pays for it all.

Castillo underpass was built in 1962. As they were building it, underground water was an unexpected problem that continues to be a problem 64 years later. Amazing to think how many tax dollars have been dumped under there....

Thomas Bishop in front of the Hollister Arch in 1949, when it was still the grand entrance for the Corona Del Mar Ranch, today known as Bishop Ranch. This photo was taken where the Arch originally was, across from Deckers on Coromar Drive.
The text talks about how successful the ranch was at the time.
