Wild Birds Unlimited

Just spotted a sparrow sized bird under the feeder that had white body feathers and a dark colored head. Tried to get a photo but no luck. My wife said she could see an occasional colored feather in the body.
⁣Thankful Tuesday: We are so grateful for Wild Birds Unlimited for generously supporting St. Max! Weather you stop in store or shop online, you will receive personalized service. Wild Birds Unlimited truely understands our love of birds. #cardinalpride ⠀

Chris, thank you for your help yesterday. The birds are loving their new seeds and we love our honey!
Breakfast with the bluebirds
This week, we are thankful for the outpouring of community support we have experienced since the floods in August. Volunteers have put in an amazing amount of effort to help us repair flood damage and get the trails back open. Monetary and in-kind donations have helped us acquire the materials needed to accomplish our very long To Do list. Meanwhile, your kind words of support and encouragement have kept us going on tough days!

Volunteer-work and repairs continue. This past week, volunteers from Girl Scout Troop 5165 helped us clear debris from the trees and shrubs along the native plant corridor. Students from Garnet Valley High School's Interact Club used their elbow grease to get all 70 chairs from the Log Cabin clean. In addition, volunteers Jane and Gwen worked hard on repairs and cleanup in the Grist Mill!

If you would like to help with the continuing cleaning up and repair, please consider a donation!

The birds in North Wilmington sure love the bird seed from Wild Birds!
Progress is progress, no matter the size of the task! This past week, staff and volunteers worked hard clearing debris from trails, cleaning the Visitor Center filing cabinets that got wet during the flood, and getting the parking lots cleaned up and ready for re-surfacing. Eagle Scout Ryan Orso was also out working on his new bridge project that will help restore trail connectivity. The multiple Monarch Butterfly chrysalids popping up all over the Visitor Center railings remind us of our progress and the things we are working towards!

If you would like to help with the cleanup and restoration but are unable to come in person, please consider a donation. You can even get a thank you gift from Wild Birds Unlimited if you do!

For this week’s update, we’re highlighting the amazing work of volunteers from Wild Birds Unlimited! Two groups of volunteers came out on Saturday to help with cleanup along a section of the Creek Trail. This stretch of trail encompasses a floodplain meadow that is a popular stop during monthly bird walks. Volunteers of all ages worked hard to remove sand and gravel bars from the trail and fill in eroded holes. They also cleared flood debris from the trail and nearby trees, and removed shrubs that had been uprooted by the flooding. Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers- the Creek Trail looks awesome! #bringbackthemill

A special group of volunteers organized by Wild Birds Unlimited helped out over the weekend with our efforts to #bringbackthemill after last month’s floods. The site remains closed at this time, but follow us on Facebook for updates and upcoming volunteer opportunities! #newlingristmill
Staff and volunteers continue to work hard to clean up flood damage throughout the buildings and grounds! Over this last week, we’ve continued to remove mud and debris from the Visitor Center, Grist Mill, and Blacksmith Shop. We even rescued a frog from the crawl space below the Visitor Center while working to disinfect the space!

Trail damage assessments are almost done. We’ve got a lot of work to do to get them opened back up again. If you are interested in helping out with future trail repair days, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator Jessica Shahan at [email protected].

Is anyone getting excited about nesting season approaching?

Not sure about you, but many of us here at NABS start thinking about nest boxes, eggs, baby bluebirds, etc., the minute we enter into a New Year. Even in mid January, we are already preparing for nesting season 2022!

Maybe this adorable photo will help get you excited! It was taken by Bill Bender of Maryland last August.

Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research is one of the best places to take sick or injured birds. Please consider donating to their cause. Also, please read their story below about admitting 100 Bald Eagles 🦅 so far this year. Amazing!

𝟭𝟬𝟬! That is how many Bald Eagles we have admitted so far this year. Yes, it is a record for us; however, there are two sides to this milestone. Forty years ago, these mighty raptors were in danger of becoming extinct. Thanks to continued conservation efforts, the Bald Eagle population is now thriving, and in 2007 they were removed from the list of Threatened and Endangered Species--- quite the success story! But, the combination of their population increase along with human population growth in prime eagle habitats, such as along shorelines, is putting these majestic raptors at an increased risk for unintentional and sometimes intentional harm. Bald Eagles are admitted to our clinic for a number of reasons, including injuries sustained from territorial disputes and vehicle strikes, gunshot wounds, and rodenticide and lead poisoning---many injuries that are human-caused. No matter how many Bald Eagles cross our threshold, we are dedicated to professionally care for them every day of the year, thanks to the support of people who care about these magnificent birds. This support allows us to continue offering the care to heal their wounds, feed them nutritional meals, and house them in specially-designed habitats to give them their best chance of returning to life in the wild, where they belong. If you would like to support our ongoing efforts, please make a donation at https://tristatebird.givingfuel.com/support. Thank you!

As winter is approaching, let's create more habitat for birds and other wildlife. Maybe purchase a live Christmas tree this year that can be planted in your yard as a start for an evergreen grove that you can add to each year. Even if you have cut tree, you can stand it up outside and decorate it with peanut butter pinecones, popcorn or cranberry chains to support the birds. Then in the spring, you can cut it up and use the branches as mulch or add them to your stick pile in a back corner of your yard. As Doug Tallamy says, "It is increasingly clear that much of our wildlife will not be able to survive unless food, shelter, and nest sites can be found in suburban habitats."

Our Story

Ever since we opened our doors in 2016, it's been our goal to share our love for birds with as many people as possible. We carry a variety of high-quality bird seed blends, suets, seed cylinders and other foods that will help attract all manner of wild birds to your yard. Situated in a laid-back atmosphere fit for relaxed shopping, our store is an experience that's just as soothing as sighting the feathered friends you're sure to meet after you visit. Aside from our high-quality foods and bird-feeding accessories, we also have plenty of gifts for you and the other bird lovers in your life. At the end of the day, we just want to share the joy of nature with all our customers. After all, we specialize in bringing people and nature together and doing it with excellence.
