🌟ARTIST IN THE SPOTLIGHT🌟
TRACIE FREAD
Swag and cover designer
I was thinking back to when I first met Tracie Fread, and I had to smile. We were both members of author Brittney Sahin’s group, and I noticed the little magnetic bookmarks Brittney had for her books. They were tiny images of her books and since I was just about to publish my first novel, I wanted some for my book too. I asked Brittney who made them and she said Tracie Fread. That was the start of a wonderful friendship.
Though we haven’t met in person, I feel like Tracie’s one of my close friends. Like many of us in the book world, Tracie says she is extremely introverted unless she is talking to someone about books. She’s definitely a kindred spirit.
Tracie said she started making the magnetic bookmarks for herself and her children.
I wanted something fun and personal to use while reading. At the time, I wasn't thinking about building a business or working with authors. I was simply creating something I enjoyed.
Everything changed because I was a fan. I loved author Brittney Sahin's Stealth Ops series and decided to design a bookmark inspired by the books. On a whim, I sent it to her in a Facebook message, never expecting anything to come from it. To my surprise, she loved it and ordered a set. From there, I became her bookmark designer, and what started as a single bookmark grew into stickers, magnetic bookmarks, and other reader swag.
It’s been an absolute joy to work with Tracie on my swag. I will get a wild hair idea for some swag and message her. And within a short time, she will send me back a design. And sometimes she will get an idea and just send me something she thinks would go great with my stories. She’s so creative and I have loved everything she’s sent me.
And not long after she started doing my book swag, I noticed a post in Brittney’s group about Tracie doing her book cover for her new book.
“…one day Brittney sent me a message that would completely change the direction of my creative life.
"Hey, if you ever learn how to do book covers, let me know."
It was a simple message, but it planted a seed. I started teaching myself cover design and learning everything I could. What followed still feels a little surreal. Since then, I've designed seven book covers for Brittney, and those opportunities led to others. DeDe reached out after seeing my work, and I've since designed three covers for her as well.
Looking back, it's amazing to think that everything started because I loved a book series enough to make a bookmark and send a message. That one small act opened doors I never knew existed.”
Today, she primarily creates a variety of bookish swag including bookmarks, stickers, badge ribbons, art prints, reader accessories, and custom items for authors and events.
“What I enjoy most is creating pieces that help readers connect more deeply with the stories they love while helping authors bring their worlds to life in a visual way.”
As for the future, she says her vision is evolving. Working full time at her day job and taking care of six kids and being Nona to one, she says “life is a wonderful chaos.”
But this is her creative dream. Her passion.
“I want to continue building a creative space where my love of books, storytelling, and design can coexist. Whether that's through swag, cover concepts, or future collaborations, I want to create things that make people excited about stories.”
“You can find me sharing my reading life, book reviews, recommendations, and creative projects on Bookstagram, Facebook, and TikTok under .”
And if you're interested in working with me, the best way to reach me is by email at [email protected].
Right now, due to other commitments, I'm focusing primarily on bookmark design—but if my journey has taught me anything, it's that you never know where one small creative idea might lead.

ARTIST IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Author
TIERNEY JAMES

I have someone very special to me in the spotlight this week. Author Tierney James was one of the first people to read my writing. She’d been published several years when I met her, with several books already under her belt and she became my mentor.
Her writing spans just about every area you can think of when it comes to books. She’s written children’s books, cookbooks and even writing and marketing help books. But her passion is in the area of fiction.
Her first book came out of something that happened to her in real life.
“When I moved to Northern California because of a job transfer for my husband, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands when my teens went to school every day. Out of the blue, strange encounters began happening to me. Complete strangers stopped me and tried to strike up a conversation, always calling me Melanie. Once I alerted each person, I was not Melanie, they apologized and hurried off. The DMV took me aside and actually interrogated me about who was I? Did I have another name? Why was I living there? Well, you get the idea. And I was always supposed to be Melanie. I began to wonder who this woman might be. Was she in danger? Could the witness protection program be involved? Had Melanie committed a crime? I began to fill a notebook with concerns and before I knew it, the swirl of a story idea was born.
In 2013 I published my first novel, An Unlikely Hero, about a woman who stumbled into a web of secrets and a national security emergency. Her domestic skills as a wife and mother, helped her discover an extraordinary strength within she didn’t know existed. I’m currently working on #12 in that series.
The series is the Enigma series. But that isn’t the only genre she’s tried her hand at. She loves action, so she’s written action adventures, geopolitical, domestic thrillers, romantic suspense, cozy mysteries and supernatural, and soon she will be publishing a science fiction book and a YA fantasy. WHEW! Do you think she’s busy? And she still finds time to travel and spend time with her family.
And where does she get all these story ideas you might ask? Well at least some come from her travels.
“My love of travel and cultures took me on adventures throughout Africa, Asia and Europe. From the Great Wall of China to floating the Okavango Delta of Botswana, I used those experiences to weave unique stories into the adventures I love to write. Living on a Native American reservation and in a mining town, help fuel the characters in the Enigma and Dark Side series.”
She’s been a writer of sorts since she was ten. At that time, she was writing puppet plays. She dreamed about being a published author. Once her youngest child went off to college, she finally was able to make that ten-year-old’s dream come true.
“Scared to death to start, but taking the leap anyway, I discovered a whole new world of writers, books, ideas, new friends and many who were anxious to teach me the ropes. Twenty-five books later, I’ve hit a lot of milestones I set for myself.”
Over the years, her writing has evolved, but she will tell you, her love is writing thrillers. She loves to write, edge-of-your-seat experiences with moments of heart pounding drama and plenty of unexpected twists and turns. Currently, she is working on four different stories that she hopes to have published in the next eighteen months.
When she’s not in her writing cave, she enjoys helping beginning writers in their quest to becoming a published author. She even teaches workshops and classes.
Hmmm, that sounds very familiar.
I can say from my experience, she does an awesome job. She has taught me so much and given me the love of helping other authors on their journey.
Outside of the writing community she enjoys gardening and spending time with her family, which fills her life with plenty of laughter.
You can find her books on Amazon and just about anywhere books are sold.
