How we work with concussions.

09/28/2026

Welcome to the new and improved NeuroWorks Wellness Center, where we make sure no one sits in the dark after a concussion!

09/16/2026

You’ve had a concussion. Maybe it was from a blow to the head during a football game, or maybe you were in a fender bender. Maybe your toddler made you bonk your head on a piece of furniture. Whether you lost consciousness, saw stars, or simply had a mild headache, concussions deplete your energy and require a specific recovery process.

At NeuroWorks Wellness Center, we offer a roadmap that helps you heal efficiently. The old recommendation of “just rest” is not enough. We know that there are at least three levels of care that are required: 1. Exercise Tolerance. 2. Diet & Lifestyle. 3. Neurological Regulation. Our program addresses all three.

Whether you just had an injury or are years out, we can help.

NeuroWorks Wellness Center is now open in Georgetown, Tx and offers virtual assistance.

We have some exciting updates to share!

Our family has officially moved from the Houston area to Round Rock, Texas, and both of our practices are continuing to grow during this transition.

Because so much has changed recently, I also want to clear up something that may not be obvious from our social media:

We are actively accepting new clients and patients right now.

All-Star Animal Chiropractic is continuing to provide mobile animal chiropractic care in both the Greater Houston area and Central Texas.

We are currently building routes between the two regions and continuing to care for dogs, cats, horses, and other animals who may benefit from appropriately trained chiropractic care.

If you are located in or around Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park, Leander, Austin, Sugar Land, Houston, Katy, Richmond, Rosenberg, or the surrounding communities, please reach out to ask about availability and upcoming travel dates.

At the same time, NeuroWorks Wellness Center is actively preparing to open our in-person clinic in the Round Rock and North Austin area.

We are currently searching for the right physical location where we can provide specialized chiropractic and supportive care for people experiencing:

• Persistent post-concussion symptoms
• Migraine and complex headaches
• Neck pain and cervical dysfunction
• Dizziness and difficulty tolerating activity
• Nutritional and lifestyle factors that may interfere with recovery
• Other neurological and neuromusculoskeletal concerns

Although our physical clinic doors are not open yet, NeuroWorks is not closed.

We are currently seeing patients virtually throughout Texas.

Our virtual services focus on evaluating and managing the nutritional, metabolic, lifestyle, and recovery factors that may contribute to ongoing symptoms.

Depending on the individual, virtual care may include:

• A detailed health and symptom history
• Review of previous laboratory testing and medical records
• Nutritional assessment
• Laboratory recommendations when clinically appropriate
• Personalized nutrition and supplement guidance
• Hydration and meal-pattern support
• Sleep and recovery strategies
• Lifestyle modifications
• Coordination with other healthcare professionals when additional evaluation or treatment is needed

For someone recovering from a concussion or struggling with persistent neurological symptoms, the answer is rarely one isolated treatment.

Symptoms may be influenced by several overlapping factors, including the neck, exercise tolerance, sleep, hydration, nutrition, stress, medication effects, and underlying medical concerns.

Virtual care allows us to begin addressing the factors that can be evaluated and supported remotely while we prepare to offer hands-on chiropractic care, neurological assessment, exercise-tolerance testing, and additional in-person services in Central Texas.

You do not need to live in Round Rock to become a NeuroWorks patient.

We are especially hoping to connect with more individuals and families throughout Texas who are looking for thoughtful, evidence-informed nutritional and lifestyle support.

Our approach is not based on miracle promises or one-size-fits-all protocols.

We take time to review the full picture, explain what we find, develop realistic recommendations, monitor progress, and refer when another provider’s expertise is needed.

If you have been following our move and assumed that we were temporarily closed or not accepting new patients, please know that both practices are active.

All-Star Animal Chiropractic is accepting new animal clients in Central Texas and along our Houston travel routes.

NeuroWorks Wellness Center is accepting new virtual patients throughout Texas while we work toward opening our physical clinic.

We are deeply grateful to the Houston-area families who have trusted us over the years, and we are excited to continue serving them while also becoming part of the Round Rock, Georgetown, and North Austin communities.

To learn more about either service, feel free to contact us at 713-355-9415!

Please feel free to share this post with someone who may benefit from either service.

We are here, we are growing, and we are accepting new patients.

Story of the day:

When a woman thinks she's having a hormonal crisis but tells us she's had five head injuries in the past 15 years, we listen. Today, Dr. Hailey Heard Arnold assessed multiple labs from our post-concussion syndrome package only to find a few triggers totally unrelated to "hormones" -- antibodies against the blood brain barrier, increased zonulin, micronutrient deficiencies, and gut dysbiosis.

DUTCH test? Fine. Organic Acids? Fine. Menstrual cycle? Fine.

However, her gut-brain axis was on fire (not literally). Antibodies against the BBB were present, no beneficial gut bacteria were present, and major micronutrient deficiencies that protect the mucosal membrane were found (Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin E).

She felt "hormonal" because she was fatigued, gaining weight, and having random brain zaps (her description). She was moody, irritable, and had weird skin erruptions.

As humans, we tend to group our symptoms into what we think is correct -- women always assume it's hormones. Chances are, it's the gastrointestinal tract getting mixed signals from the nervous system all because you've had a head trauma go undiagnosed.

So what do we do about it?

In this case, we support the gut: make sure motility is working, increase our fiber so that we can replenish the microbiome, support the body with the right micronutrients via food and supplements, and regulate the nervous system. We get to know the person thoroughly via conversation, questionnaires, and thorough testing protocols. Then, we write out our plan of action that encompasses her goals, her needs, her wants, and her actually abilities.

We don't just assume, "oh, you're gaining weight and are fatigued -- here's a pill." No! We get to the core issues at hand, restore balance, and restore vitality!

Even better...we work virtually. Wherever you are, there we are, too.

If you're feeling "hormonal," we can help connect the dots about what's actually going on.

Text us at 713.355.9415 to see if we can help.

What Is Persistent Post-Concussion Syndrome?

Most people expect a concussion to resolve in a few weeks. Rest, limit screens, avoid activity, and then bounce back. But for many people, that is not what happens.

Persistent post-concussion syndrome (PPCS) refers to symptoms that linger beyond the expected recovery window, typically three months or more after the initial injury. Those symptoms can include headaches, brain fog, sleep disturbances, light and sound sensitivity, dizziness, mood changes, and difficulty concentrating. The list is long because the impact of a concussion is rarely confined to one system.

Here is what is important to understand: PPCS is not a sign that you are broken, weak, or imagining your symptoms. It is a sign that the nervous system, the cervical spine, and often several downstream systems in the body are still struggling to find their footing after a significant disruption.

At NeuroWorks, we approach persistent concussion recovery by looking at the full picture, not just the brain in isolation. Recovery is possible, and it often looks very different from the initial advice of rest and wait.

If you have been managing symptoms for months without a clear path forward, you are not alone, and there is more that can be done.

This one surprises almost every patient we tell it to: a concussion can disrupt your hormones.

The pituitary gland sits at the base of the brain and serves as the master regulator of your hormonal system. It is also one of the structures most vulnerable to the mechanical forces involved in a head injury. When the pituitary is affected, even subtly, the downstream effects can be wide-reaching: disrupted cortisol patterns, changes in thyroid function, shifts in estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone, and dysregulation of the stress hormone axis.
These changes do not always show up on standard lab panels, because standard labs test for disease-level abnormalities rather than the subtler functional imbalances that follow concussion. This is why we use functional medicine lab work as part of our assessment for patients with persistent symptoms.

Fatigue that does not respond to rest, mood changes, irregular cycles, weight fluctuation, and difficulty recovering from physical exertion are all symptoms that can have a hormonal driver rooted in the original head injury.

If your concussion symptoms have been attributed to anxiety, depression, or simply "not recovering well" without anyone looking at your hormonal picture, it may be time for a more complete evaluation.

Your gut and your brain talk to each other constantly through the vagus nerve. After a concussion, that conversation gets disrupted.

Research shows that within hours of a traumatic brain injury, the gut microbiome begins to shift. Intestinal permeability increases, allowing inflammatory molecules to enter the bloodstream and travel back to an already-injured brain. The result is a feedback loop: brain inflammation worsens gut symptoms, and gut dysfunction worsens brain inflammation.
This is why patients recovering from concussion frequently report new or worsening digestive symptoms — bloating, irregular bowel habits, abdominal discomfort — even when no one has connected those symptoms to their injury.

If you or your athlete has been dealing with gut issues alongside concussion symptoms, this is not a coincidence. It is a well-documented physiological response, and it is one of the things we assess and address as part of a complete recovery plan.

The gut-brain axis is not a peripheral detail in concussion care. It is central to it.

We are now scheduling pre-season baseline testing for student athletes in the Austin and Houston areas. We partner directly with school districts and sports clubs to bring testing to your facility — no clinic visit required.

A baseline test captures how your athlete's brain functions when they are completely healthy. If a concussion ever occurs, we compare their post-injury results to that personal snapshot — not a national average — so we can build a care plan tailored specifically to them.

We come to your home turf. Reach out to schedule your team's session before the season begins.
