His bench is a place to go and reflect on his life, meditate, pray, talk to him, share in his memory in whatever way you need.

Seven years ago I did not know why Dan wanted to drive 5 hours each way for 2 minutes of darkness. Five hours and two minutes later, I knew why. I told him and all the kids, no matter what you have going on in your life, in seven years, take a day off and a road trip.
Life had different plans for us, but the Earth kept on spinning, the sun kept on shining, and the moon kept its promise, and so did I.

On his last birthday, we had just moved into our new house. We threw a housewarming-Dan’s birthday-Sarah’s high school graduation party, a Changeabration. When I asked Dan what kind of cake he wanted, he said a white cake with white frosting. I made an executive decision to get chocolate. “The people demand chocolate.”
I promised I’d get him the white cake for his next birthday.
Now we have white cake every year to honor this angel of a man who lived. We have white cake to respect the tomorrow that’s never promised. We have white cake as a reminder to love in real time. The people will understand, and the person you love will know.
Happy Birthday Handsome. I will love you forever.

I’m not sure when the construction was completed, but today I realized that River Park is open again. The park looks beautiful and Dan’s bench is even more welcoming and peaceful than before. If you’re in the area, come by and say, hello.

The city of Geneva has let me know the park is temporarily closed for construction. The bench will be unaccessible for a short time, until the renovation is complete. They did not give me an estimated date.

I’m not sure what’s going on but his bench is still here. I better call the city Monday morning. I won’t tell them I snuck in the cage.
