Did you know, the first telephone book was published February 21st 1878 in New Haven Connecticut, and it was not much more than a piece of cardboard with a listing of only 50 local businesses. Internet first (80% of the time) when they need a new product or service, and printed Yellow Pages only second or third (about 50% of the time.) In addition, even if the consumer does reach for the printed Yellow Pages, your ad still has to stand out (size, graphics and color,) which ups the expense of being in the book. The convenience of "set it and forget it" is now trumped by the more labor intensive but productive SEM options." Nearly 70% of adults in the U.S. "rarely or never" use the phone book, according to a recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive. Instead, most of them (60%) use the Internet to find products and services, contact information, business location, business hours, a phone number, and other information. Furthermore, that practice is certain to continue to rise, especially as smart phone adoption and location-based services both grow. To place an ad for your business in the Yellow Pages like the one on the right would cost your business around $252 a year, and for what? A mention in small print 1/2 the size of what you see on this web page and in a small area surrounded by much larger big business color ads. A full-page ad that will grab someone's attention in the phone book will cost you about $11,200.
