TOSCA LEE is the New York

On June 12, 1967, the Supreme Court overturned Virginia’s “Racial Integrity Law” that made in*******al marriage illegal. But it didn’t pave the way immediately. The following year in 1968 my parents were denied a marriage license because laws forbidding the marriage of a “white and non-white person” were still on the books in Georgia. This article was written about my parents’ marriage license application (though it does not mention them by name). Dad was finishing his PhD and living in Athens (Georgia) at the time.

Get ready with me—author edition. Including all the must have beverages and chores and my weird TV quirk. Because we all have our things. Right??

I kept that too-small dog bed (because there was no way I was getting it back into the box) but we did get him a large mattress-sized new one for the living room (which he remains suspicious of). This morning I found him in the hallway outside our bedroom clinging to this dinky thing like it was a life preserver in scary robot vacuum-infested waters. 😂

Late night discussion: do you get nostalgic? For places from the town you grew up in, foods you loved, old commercials, TV shows, people from your past? I have been these past few years—for everything from old shows to commercials. Lately I’ve tried to find out what happened to my first dance teacher. I imagine this is the luxury of having lived enough decades to be nostalgic (if you’re too young there’s not much to get nostalgic about, right??)

Pictured: young nerd Tosca, graduation day from Smith College (I had graduated a semester early and gotten married between December and the ceremony in May) and at Oxford University with one of my professors after fresh(wo)man year (Smith remains an all-woman college).
