Micro greens are a powerful superfood that can be grown anywhere. These powerhouses are easy to grow but very versatile addition for meals, desserts and drinks. Compared to other plants, they provide instant gratification because they are ready for harvest in under three weeks. Some varieties can be ready in 10 - 14 days. They are quick, easy and nutritionally dense, the perfect first crop for beginners. Start with one tray and expand from there.

Seed Saving

This post hopes to explore the impact of seed saving, heirloom plants and foods on African American culture.

Saving seeds strengthens cultivars by reinforcing positive characteristics from drought resistance, cold hardiness, fruit color to abundance or shape) over time. Benefits of seed saving include engaging in the cycle of life, preserving heirloom varieties, encouraging genetic diversity, and saving money.

Seed saving and sharing was a way to honor the heritage of gardens, preserve the history of black communities, the illuminate legacy of slavery and the cultural influences at the heart of our cuisines. Seeds reflect culture, tradition, spirituality, cooperation and diversity. Seed saving is a vital method of survival, a way to provide diverse and healthy food for families and communities. Africa has such a vast diversity of rich foods, plants & flowers depleted by the impact of slavery.

Heirloom seeds of plants native to Africa and heirloom seeds of plants traditionally associated with African American culinary traditions have been preserved through generations of seed saving & sharing. It includes varieties of beans, peas, watermelon, sesame, cabbage, okra, peanuts or peppers. There are examples of vegetables, herbs, nuts, seeds and flowers thriving in Afro-American culture today. To the many generations of seed savers preserving black cultures, I honor you.

Well that’s it folks. We are nearing the end of black history month. I hope you enjoyed this journey of our stories in history during the month of February. March is Women's History Month. I hope you will join me in commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in history.

Be Well

Don’t give up

I had been contemplating putting my feelings in paper. Giving life to them, but was hesitant. Then, I was inspired to write this post by .mocha.gardener. She wrote a post about a race she struggled through and how a current passion she is working on reminds her of that time. I am in a similar place.

I started a new venture with my husband. I can’t express the excitement I experienced with the anticipation of working on our passion with my soulmate. I mean, what could be better right? During the R& D and planning stages, I could not wait to commence with the hands on portion. I was giddy with joy.

Sadly, it was delayed due to a health crisis. Now, I am here and after two months of steaming through this project I am physically exhausted. There are some days I am mentally exhausted, but my body can not handle the physicality of the project. I am just not the same. I started to experience some guilt.

In the meantime, I am working on building my vitality. We have a few more weeks to finish this stage. At that time, we will take a break from the renovations and reassess.

I say this to say, sometimes we can’t always be like a lion, roaring and storming our way through life. Sometimes we have to be humble and be proud and content with the baby steps. After all, it’s in the name…”One One Cocoa full basket.” Little by little, step by step with patience and diligence we will fill the basket…get the job done. So for today, I am not roaring, just purring my way through. Remember to do what is best for you. Tomorrow is another day.

We are hosting an Edifying Edibles Fine Dining Experience on Sat Feb 12, 2022 @ 6PM.

Guests will learn about Cannabis and the similarities, differences of the plant cannabinoids, terpenes and benefits at our fine dining event. The experience will provide insight into the many profiles of Cannabis. We aim to provide a higher level of thought regarding cannabis and it’s derivatives.

Happy Belated More Herbs Less Salt Day 🍃☘️🍀🌿🪴💨🌬
This day was designated to encourage the substation of herbs for salt when preparing & consuming foods. We can incorporate it into our lifestyles by:
🍃Grow an herb garden to supplement herbs for salt and other flavorings
🍃Cooking at home, rather than eating out
🍃Purchase less pre-packaged and convenience foods
🍃Check labels for salt content to monitor intake. Substitute for low salt and no salt options when possible.
🍃Try no salt seasonings or make your own

Soooooo…
I have been quiet for some time. I have not forgotten about you. It’s been a reflective and productive time for my family. I will say no more…just dropping this right here.

My father loved these plants. I’m planting a new moon garden in his honor.

I don’t usually post personal threads. My dad transitioned. I have been having difficulty posting. We spent a great deal of time together, especially in our gardens. He has so many unique plants and took great pride in his garden. Thank you for your patience with me. I will return shortly.

Children who sense
the rose needs the thorn

And when they're grown &

who have no voice

may they draw upon that
wilder bond, those days of

and be the ones.

Moon gardens are natural habitats that contribute to the ecology of your landscape. The exhilarating aromas, displays of color & texture entice the senses. The oasis provides a space for reflection & grounding. It should evoke an experience for all.

Design it to reflect moonlight but also remain visible & fragrant during an obscured or new moon & daylight hours. The objective is balance of color & diversity. Plant white flowers for a monochromatic tone. Add pops of pale yellow, lavender & pink.

Color & Shimmer -
The silvery gray stems of Snow in Summer, Silver Carpet, Dusty Miller, Lambs Ears, Blue Fescue, Variegated hosta, Juniper & Lavender have a natural reflective aspect adding silver blue hues. Cosmos reflect the night sky. Moonflowers & datura unfurl at nights.

Fragrance -
Jasmine, Gardenia, Sweet alyssum, Sweet Woodruff, Night Blooming, Jasmine & Nicotiana add intoxicating fragrance.

Texture -
Add texture with Cleome, Artemisia, silver thyme, eucalyptus, Queen Anne’s Lace & bunny tails. Bamboo, stones, sea shells & garden ornaments provide textural dimension.

Taste -
Herbs & edible flowers make a perfect treat. Add peas for snacking & soil fixing.

Pollinators -
Attract pollinators like moths, native bees & bats with white butterfly Bush. Moon flowers attract moths. Many nighttime flowers count on nocturnal insects for pollination. Night blooming jasmine is a fragrant flower & attracts night visitors.

Lighting -
A solar light path to the garden is functional & appealing. White rocks, beads provide a reflective surfaces. Reflective moon globes & glazing balls will give the impression of a simulated moon sitting among the flowers. String lights, glow in the dark pits, accessories & spotlight lighting accent subtle hues & provide radiance.

Sound -
A moon garden should be peaceful. Place away from traffic & other noises. The aim is to enjoy the nighttime sounds of the garden. Wind chime & water fountain sounds ground.

Track the moonlight. Note where moonlight floods your garden & how it casts shadows. Shadows of uniquely shaped plants add appeal. Don’t forget trees, shrubs, vines & seating.

An example of antagonistic plants: Beans, peas & leeks are all companion plants to spinach. Leeks can not be planted near beans or peas. Plant beans to the rear of the bed and leeks toward the front of the bed. Cilantro, borage & strawberries would be planted between these. Spinach interplanted with leeks, beans & peas. You can interplant with the strawberries to give them shade and hide from hungry birds. A border of radishes as a trap crop. In 2020 the yearly count of overwintering monarchs showed an even more dramatic decrease of 53% from the previous year’s count. The numbers are now well below the threshold at which government scientists predict the migration could collapse.

National Spinach Day 2021 🥗
Spinach is loaded with nutrients such as Iron, Vitamin A & Calcium. The “Herb of Persia” or the “Persian Green” was exported to China in the mid 17th century & to Europe a few hundred years later.

Types of spinach:
Savoy: dark green color with curly leaves; usually sold in fresh bunches.
Flat or Smooth Leaf: a broad, smooth leaves; mostly grown for canned and frozen spinach as well as soups, baby food & processed foods.
Semi-savoy: a hybrid variety with crinkly leaves. Generally is sold fresh & processed.

In the garden
Beans & peas make excellent companions for spinach. As they grow, they’ll provide shade to protect the tender spinach plants from summer heat. Spinach loves nitrogen. Keep peas away from alliums.

Cilantro and nasturtiums discourages aphids, potato beetles & spider mites.

Intersperse spinach with the brassicas, they do not compete for the nutrients & the roots systems are at different levels. Spinach can be interplanted, like lettuce, with most young vegetables in the garden to suppress weeds & retain soil moisture. Harvest before other vegetables mature.

Radishes planted near your spinach function as a trap crop for leaf miners. Keep radishes away from potatoes or agastache.

Strawberries benefit from the saponin produced by spinach, which serves as a natural antifungal & antibacterial. Spinach also provides sages for strawberries as it grows. Do not plant strawberries next to brassicas.
