One of the most universal BIG BASS BAITS EVER
I am a fisherman just like you. I have seen and used almost every bait after watching and reading claims of magic baits catching giants bass. Some produced and some didnt live up to my expectations. I always look at things scientifically and there are always variables and conditions why baits work at certain times and conditions and why they dont. As lure designers we are always looking to create the next "Super Bait" , the one that really catches fish. Probably the greatest all around "super bait" is the Senko developed by Gary Yamamoto- The Chatter bait falls into this category as well as the Slug-go,Hula Popper /Jitterbug and of coarse the plastic worm developed by Creme. All are amazing baits that catch fish.

Let me tell you about the Mega Bug- Although some wouldnt consider it a "Super Bait" it definitely falls into the category of a big fish producer. Its bulky profile along with its six appendages really displaces a lot of water and what I believe will provoke strikes when other more subtle "creature baits" dont. After fishing this bait for 5 years,I have found so many ways to use it. Its a great flipping bait-whether in heavy cover such as w**ds and brush or flipping under docks. I have used it on the shakey head as well as Carolina rigging it. One technique I discovered was using it with a very light belly weight or even weightless dragging it over mats of grass or over lily pads. I started using in instead of my frogs because the hook up ratio is so much better. The bass just want to attack and kill it. What I discovered though was it really is a big bass bait-I do catch some smaller bass with it but the fish over 4 lbs really seem to have an attitude for these.

Waters cooling down and it's that time of year again. Geese are grouped up yapping away. Yes annoying but its just like all wildlife, getting ready for winter. Lilly pads are dieing off which will put the bass onto the nearest hard cover. Wood or rocks will be what I call bass magnets. Bass will collect around these solid hard objects and while water is still relatively warm, they will be aggressive.
Seriously bass fishing for over 45 years ,I've told friends that my biggest bass of the year always comes in October. 99% of the time ,what do I catch it on, Yes a buzz bait.
Yes I've thrown crankbaits, jigs and everything else at them but for some reason the buzz bait just seems to get the giants. I'm using a FAVORITE 7 ft med heavy action rod and baitcaster reel. 14 lb test mono ,,yes mono. I don't like braid or flour when throwing the buzzbait. I want a little bit of stretch paired with a giving tipoff the rod. I also want backbone on that rod so when I set the hook I whack them right between the eyes. I high speed retrieve to take up the slack on long casts.
Listen it's not rocket science, cover the water and look for obvious targets. I look for laydowns, rockpiles, boulders or whatever stands out . You can catch them fishing from shore or from a boat. You can fish them slow and keep it in the strike longer or crank it a little faster creating a fleeing motion of the bait. That usually creates a reaction strike and often violent.
The buzzbait of choice /??? yup the Cavitron. Usually I keep it simple, black with gold blade. Stained water ,white chartreuse. 1/4 oz produces in calm water . 3/8 if there's some chop. Keep it simple , just go out and enjoy yourself. Buzzbait fishing is in my opinion the most exciting way to catch not only numbers BUT GIANTS

Well bass fishing is if full swing. Bass are off the beds in 90 % of the country. Theyre basically done sulking after the rigorous ritual of the spawn. Now it's time to feed up and replenish their fat reserves. No more concave bellies. Baitfish are also schooling up and cruising around the lakes and ponds.
Where to find them in the heat??
Bass will move up shallow to feed in the low-light hours. Looking for easy meals they can coral and pin up against the shoreline. The bass are no longer cold water sluggish and will chase baits at long distances. The strike zone has increased from a foot or two in cold water to 20 feet under certain conditions.
So what does that mean,? YOU CAN FISH FASTER AND COVER MORE WATER MORE EFFICIENTLY.
SO BAITS TO USE/ Spinnerbaits. Replicating baitfish with profile, vibration and flash. So easy to use . Cast it out reel it in. Cover water in all areas of the water column. Cast right on the shoreline. Bass will often sit or cruise in inches of water looking for an easy meal .
Look for any irregularity along the shoreline where bass can ambush prey.
Look for w**d patches ,rocks or wood. Cast right in or along the cover. Its a high percentage area.
Another bait that catches not only numbers but giants as well is the buzzbait. You can cover water quickly and it so easy to use ,as easy as the spinnerbait. Whats the difference??? The spinnerbait is more universal. It can be fished right along the surface or by adapting your retrieval speed can be fished at and depth of the water column. Buzzbaits are strictly /well kinda / used along the surface. Look for the same area and components you are fishing with the spinnerbait /w**ds,rock wood etc.. bass will move deeper as the sun climbs unless they have what I call canopy cover. What's canopy cover? Any cover over the bass..

So to wrap it up,summer is here and the bass are hungry. Fish shallow in early morning and dusk, low light conditions. Look for the subtleties along the shorelines and I guarantee you will catch more bass .

Well its that time of year again. ITS BUZZBAIT TIME.

The bass are basically done spawning in many areas of the country. Water temperature is up and bass are looking to replenish fat reserves after the rigorous ritual of the spawn
Bass will be up shallow looking for easy meals. One of the most productive baits for not only catching numbers but giants as well is the buzzbait.

It mimics a baitfish or oanother type of small creature scurrying across the surface. The buzzbait covers water quickly and efficiently.
It can be fished over grass, around stumps, lay downs and other types of cover. Its also very productive in open water situations.
Anglers always thought it was most productive in low light conditions such as morning, evening and night time fishing.
Believe me I probably throw a buzzbait more than anyone in the country. I have dispelled the myth and have caught bass every minute at every hour of the day.
I like using a Favorite 7ft med heavy action rod, high speed reel and NO IM NOT USING BRAID. I use 14 lb straight mono.
I want a little stretch for the delay. BRAID has no stretch and usually rips the bait away from the fish. Yes BRAID has its advantages but not with buzzbaits.
Colors ,
Black low light conditions
White ,all day use
Chartreuse, dirty to muddy water or smallmouth bass

Well its that time of year again . Up north here ice is off ,the sun is staying up longer, the bass are out of their wintering spots and they've got two things on their minds = food and spawn.
Right now southern winds will be blowing warmer water to certain areas of the lake. Two and three degree differences is huge this time of year in bass location.
If there is rip rap(ROCKY) areas, the rock's will conduct heat from the sun therefore growing algae and plankton enticing baitfish to gather.
This is a good starting spot to look for early season bass. I would say 90% of a basses early season diet are baitfish. The other 10% consist of crustaceans etc.
So , what's the best way to catch them?? Replicate a baitfish of course. Chatterbaits yes, crankbaits yes but I still think the spinnerbait is the most universal bait for catching early season bass.
Simple to use. Dosent really get hung up. Covers water quickly and efficiently at many depths of the water columns.
What are more cosmetic attributes?
Well bass are sight feeders first and foremost. The profile of spinnerbait body replicates the baitfish. The blades create flash which attract = by sight the bass to the bait as well. Try to match the blade size to the early season baitfish size "match the hatch" as they say. My universal size is a #5 1/2 silver willowleaf . Make sure you have a smaller Colorado blade underneath to create more vibration.
The second line of offense in the bass location of prey is vibration. The bass locate prey by vibration from water displacement caused by movements of the baitfish. . The " lateral line " or central nervous system of the bass detect movement which allows the bass to locate its prey. I try to use colors that stand out in the water . Usually in the springtime the water is dirty or stained in color. Not usually clear . I use a white or combination of white and chartreuse body and skirt. As water clears I go to the more natural clearer shad colors..
Spinnerbaits are hard to beat this time of year. They produce numbers as well as giant bass for anglers for many years. Most people think they're a thing of the past. Not me.
So when you have these key components in a bait. The chances are improved that you will be able to CATCH MORE BASS...
Just a note this 11.4 lb bass was caught early on a spinnerbait .
