I wanted to write this to the American Hotel in a deferential way, unlike the way I have been treated by Joanne Carvallaro! my former manager. I was employed by the American Hotel going on 2 years in February 2021. My tardiness was impeccable, as well with the staff, owners and of cause the guest of the hotel and restaurant/bar guest. I never had an issue, never written up, always covering shifts for my coworkers always willing to help. On December 26, 2020, my goddaughters mother passed away at the age of 57 of Covid. We knew each other 35 years. On the 27th I was not scheduled to work my coworker Erika was taking over my Sundays, but Saturday night she text me while I was at the hospital mourning the lost of an amazing woman alone with my daughter, her daughter and her husband, that she was not able to go in on Sunday, I had no other choice but to cover that shift because I am a responsible person and have always been, in the frame of mind that I was in I should have not been there. On Sunday Dec 27 Joanne came in to say welcome back Erika but found me there and asked why and then I told her what happen as I started to break down in tears but yet I was there at work at 7am to 3:00pm coping with my sorrow and also being professional with everyone. On Wednesday I text Joanne and told her that I needed the day off for the wake which was Thursday January 31th, 2020 from 3-5 2 hours but at first I asked if someone could come in at 12 that I was willing to work from 7am-12, but then I had to change it to be the whole day because I didn't want to go crazy working, leaving work going home to change and pick up family member's to take to the wake, the wake was in the Bronx. This blew me away all I received from Joanne was you need to find coverage, no I am sorry for your loss, no my deepest sympathy nothing that was all the text stated! I was in shock that she was so cold towards the situation. I sent a text in a group chat explain the situation out of 5 coworkers only one responded Adriana she is fairly new and stated she could cover 7-12, but at this point I needed the whole day off, I text her privately she stated she could not. few hours later Joanne text me since no one is available I will see you at work tomorrow. Then she stated if you leave at twelve you should make it by 3pm to the wake. I was still in a state of shock on how cold hearted this women was towards the situation. I waited and then responded as follows I am not going to banter back and forth, but do you think I've been in a good frame of mind since this happen? I went in Sunday unable too in the mental state I was in but did I show up Yes, because I am responsible, but when you act like this is nothing it bothers me that everyone there is so unsympathetic! You have no ideal what I am going through! I get it I am just a body to cover the desk, but I can not just sit there like nothing is wrong. I wont be coming in! The wake was that Thursday, Friday was the cremation. so I basically took off those 2 days to attend the wake and cremation. I had not heard from anyone from work not from Joanne not even 1 coworker. I also did not go in Thursday the 7th. I took her ashes back home to her parents in Florida. I checked my account on Friday, because I have direct deposit, there was nothing there, I text my coworker to see if there was an issue with payroll she stated checks were not in which was not my question to her being that I had direct deposit the only thing that was at the office was a paystub. She stated will let you know when the checks come in, its amazing how people tend to not tell you the truth, because by now the entire place from the staff at the hotel to the restaurant manager to the waiters and bartenders they all know it by now because that is what goes on at The American Hotel not one conversation with your managers is private.
I decided to text Joanne as follows Morning I did not get my direct deposit for the days I worked the 25th and 27 is there a reason? that was at 7:38am at 8:50 she replied We will mail your check today! at 9:00am I replied I would like to pick it up, no response at 9:02 I asked So my position has been terminated, no answer, 9:40 since you have cancelled my direct deposit, 10:30 when you are just a body at work(what I was trying to say with that is she has no respect for anyone as a professional and she lacks empathy) 10:32 no response at all so I stated just mail it no worries. That was the end of the texting. I went online on unemployment to review what she was going to tell them only to find out she stated misconduct, how dare she tarnish my work reputation by stating that it was misconduct, with all the unprofessional misconducts of everything that I have seen that go on in the hotel from the kitchen staff to the bartenders to the waiters, restaurant manager etc. and she has the audacity to label my discharge as misconduct. I'm sure you remember There was an employee Evelyn, always out we all had to cover her shift constantly was she terminated from her position no of cause not her tardiness was despicable, when she would not show up on time or even not show up especially when I was on shift and I complained to Joanne and you know what answer I got from her she is a body I need to cover that shift at the front desk so we all had to endure the problem covering her shift constantly, but I was responsible and needed grieving time and I was terminated for misconduct what a joke. I am not looking for my position back because at this point I deserve a job that has respect for their employees, and are empathetic. Joanne is patting herself in the back, apparently her ego was tarnish when I told her I was not going in, because in my eyes going to my goddaughters mothers wake was important to me unlike others, and being the type of employee I was I should have been given those days off to get over the denial, anger, depression and acceptance of her death!

The American Hotel did an outstanding job on my daughter-in-law’s baby shower yesterday. The food was wonderful, the wait staff could not have been more helpful and the place is beautiful. Jim our event coordinator was right there to help in any way he could. Everything was perfect and I highly recommend The American Hotel for any event. Thank you to all who made our day so special.

Not impressed - Pat checks us in and doesn’t apologize for us waiting for someone to come to the desk. Apparently we got the last room but it’s inexcusable that before an event we can’t rest because the floors are so thin and the noise above was ridiculous and now we have to wait until the wee hours of the morning for the bar din to shut down. If I’d known we would have driven home or booked a different hotel.

Beautifully restored old hotel right in the heart of Freehold, NJ, which is where the good restaurants are, including the Market Grille downstairs. My company has put visiting executives here but this is the first time I've stayed there. My wife and I were delighted.

This really bothered me. But I’m sure most folks think I should “get over it,” that I’m being too sensitive, too pc. And to those same people, most of all to the American Hotel, I say...you just don’t get it and you clearly never will.

A Gem of a Hotel

My husband and I were very impressed with this gem of a hotel. We stayed one night for a wedding in Farmingdale where the rooms for the wedding block were astronomical! So we found this place online. The room was clean and pleasant. Our only gripe was the view of the hotel roof/alley but who goes for the view? The bar was excellent and we wish we could have enjoyed the restaurant. There were events going on downstairs but you wouldn’t have known it. Service was great- we showed up early and enjoyed a drink at the bar while they finished getting our room ready and let us check in early. The hallway was echo-y, but nothing atypical for a hotel. We have already talked about our next stay!

If you are looking for a place to stay where restaurants and bars are within a short distance including the hotel then look no further. The staff is very accommodating. I had an issue with my thermostat and they quickly moved me to another room. I have stayed here a lot while in the area.

Great downtown location - walkable to bars, restaurants, and shops - but totally quiet in the rooms. Very beautiful aesthetic.
