Summer has come and gone, and the shorter days of autumn are getting darker earlier here in Maine. At the Co-op, we turn to our Produce Department, which is truly shining with the local harvest.

A short walk through the aisles proudly shows off all Waldo County has to offer this time of year! Local broccoli, carrots, hakurei turnips, fennel, pumpkins, and each day we are receiving more produce.

If you ate today, thank a farmer! Starting with these folks: Villageside Farm, South Paw Farm, New Beat Farm, Hall Brook Farm, Ironwood Farm, Community Harvest, Stubborn Ox Farm, Bahner Farm, Rainbow Farm, and Fox Fire Farm. Thank you farmers and produce workers!
UPDATE: Indefinitely postponed!
Come on out to Villageside Farm in Freedom this Sunday from 4-6 and celebrate with us. It won’t be brutally hot! 😎

The last two years have been stressful for all of us, especially frontline essential farmers and farmworkers. What are existing resources, barriers to accessing those resources, and long-term solutions for on-farm mental wellness?

Join us at the Ag and Food Conference on February 27 for a panel discussion, "Maximizing On-Farm Mental Health: Resources, Strategies, & Policy Recommendations," where we will discuss best practices for supporting mental health in the farming community. This panel will feature Polly Shyka, a farmer at Villageside Farm and FRSAN liason from Maine, and Rachel Van Boven, a hotline operator for Farm Aid. The conversation will be moderated by Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources Deputy Commissioner Ashley Randle.

The entire Ag and Food Conference lineup is now available on our website, as well as more information on registration and ticket pricing. Sign up today at https://semaponline.org/2022-agriculture-food-conference/
We are incredibly grateful for the sponsors who made tonight's even possible. Each of them, whether well acquainted or new, have shown incredible generosity. “I am handing you a spade. This is a moment of unexpected possibility.”
-Martin Shaw

Sundays bring a slowness and quietness to our farm and family. I (Polly) often read, walk and in the springtime, water a lot of plant babies while listening to a podcast or music. This morning’s sounds in my ears brought this beautiful phrase and invitation from Martin Shaw, wise elder and storyteller. It made me think of all you gardeners who inspire our efforts in our greenhouses all spring. May your spades and seedlings bring unexpected possibilities and gifts. Meet Apricot Lemonade Cosmos. When I saw this plant out on Monhegan last summer, I really did—- I stopped in my tracks! These flowers glow. Like a sunrise? Or a happy toddler? They captured my heart. So happy to have this beauty in our seedling offerings this year. Im planning a huge planting by our porch. I planted lots. Let’s see if it was just that Monhegan light or if they are just as mesmerizing in Freedom this summer.

It was supposed to be a 'quiet little cafe' in Maine. It turned into a culinary phenomenon

We love being in community with our incredibly talented neighbors, friends and farm supporters at The Lost Kitchen. Y'all make the stuff we grow sing... real loud and real pretty. It's like living next door to Hogwarts. ✨✨✨All hugs and best wishes from across the field. xxoxx from the VF crew.
