Excited for these upcoming projects!

Frederick is receiving nearly $7 million in federal funding for four community projects secured through the FY26 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill by U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks. The funding was announced as part of nearly $70 million in federal investments for 46 projects across Maryland.

The funded projects include:

🔹 $3 million for the Frederick Youth Center
🔹 $2.478 million for the Downtown Frederick Streetscape Project
🔹 $1 million for the Taney Avenue Senior Center redevelopment and affordable senior housing
🔹 $500,000 for renovations to the Maryland Deaf Community Center

These investments will help enhance youth programming, improve downtown infrastructure, expand accessibility, and strengthen community resources throughout Frederick. Congratulations to the City of Frederick, local partners, and everyone who helped champion these projects.

Today I had the privilege of attending the Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduation in two roles: as the City Councilmember representing District 5 and as the proud mother of a graduate.

As I looked across the arena, I saw more than caps and gowns. I saw years of hard work, perseverance, growth, and resilience. I saw students who navigated challenges that no one else could fully see. I saw teachers, staff, families, and friends who helped them reach this milestone. And I saw a future full of possibility.

To the Class of 2026: the world you are entering needs your creativity, your kindness, your courage, and your ideas. You do not have to have everything figured out today. Few of us ever do. Life is less about following a perfectly straight path and more about continuing to learn, adapt, and become the people we are meant to be.

Whether your next step is college, a trade, military service, work, travel, or something entirely your own, take your curiosity with you. Stay open to new experiences. Build community wherever you go. And remember that success is measured not only by what you achieve, but by how you treat others along the way.

Congratulations, Patriots. Frederick is proud of you.

And to my daughter, Asha: watching you cross that stage today was one of the great honors of my life. ❤️

Art at City Hall

The City of Frederick invites the community to experience the Continuing Bonds Quilt Exhibition, on display in the City Hall lobby throughout the month of June as part of the City’s Art in City Hall Program.

Created by members of Living Through Loss, a grief support community for parents and loved ones who have lost a child to substance use disorder (SUD) or overdose, the quilt is a powerful reflection of remembrance, resilience, and connection.

Rather than viewing grief as a process of letting go, the concept of continued bonds recognizes that healing can include finding meaningful ways to maintain a connection with those we have lost. Through personal symbols, storytelling, and shared experiences, each quilt block honors a loved one while weaving together a collective story of love, loss, and community.

On Tuesday, June 9, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at City Hall, join us for the Continuing Bonds Quilt Opening Reception. Guests are invited to meet contributors, explore the exhibit, reflect on the stories behind the artwork, and support the individuals and families who helped create this meaningful display.

We hope you'll join us in recognizing the power of art to foster healing, remembrance, and connection.
