We are celebrating a major step forward for student parents across Maryland.
Governor Wes Moore recently signed SB 420/HB 006 into law, helping ensure student parents are better seen, counted, and supported within Maryland’s higher education system through improved data collection. We are proud to recognize the leadership and dedication of FCC English professor Dr. Anne Hofmann, whose scholarly research, organizing, and advocacy was foundational to this effort. She has been working with other Maryland and national policy experts for four years to ensure student parents are counted and supported in public higher education systems in our state.
The achievement reflects the power of collaboration, persistence, and community support. Thank you to everyone who contributed testimony, shared their experiences, and helped move this work forward.
This is the beginning of the important work ahead: ensuring this law leads to meaningful support and opportunity for student parents across Maryland.
"This law is for every parenting student who struggles to juggle the everyday needs of caregiving, financial realities, and academic deadlines," said Dr. Hofmann. "It's for all of us who wondered if the degree is worth it, and if anyone sees how hard it is to do it all in a system built for students without children. We see you, and now—because of this law—so does the State of Maryland!"

At this year's Student Leadership Awards Ceremony, we celebrated the students who have made a lasting impact on our campus through their leadership, service, involvement, and dedication.
These recognitions represent far more than accomplishments alone. They reflect hard work, determination, late-night emails, countless meetings, event planning, extra practices, problem-solving, and a commitment to making FCC a stronger community for everyone. Throughout the year, these students advocated for others, navigated challenges, built meaningful connections, and continued showing up for their peers and campus.
We were proud to recognize student leaders, student-athletes, ambassadors, student representatives, club and organization members, and many others whose contributions have helped shape the student experience.
Congratulations to all of our award recipients! We are incredibly proud of them and wish our graduates the very best as they begin their next chapter.
