Head on over to $ubstack (link in bio) to check out the first monthly choice for my WWII film club: Pressure!
And don't worry, I clearly mark where spoilers begin. 😉
If you get a chance to see the film, I'd love to hear what you think! The discussion will be in the comments of the film club's Subst@ck post for the month of June!

This wartime Rhubarb Shortcake is my new favorite Spring recipe! The green looks weird but it was absolutely delicious! 😄

Cheers to 250 🍻 is officially open!

This exhibit is what I was helping to work on last summer for my internship. I did research, sourced pictures and artifacts and wrote exhibit text. It's so surreal to see all of my hard work come to fruition in physical form! Everyone at the National Museum of Industrial History worked incredibly hard to pull this exhibit together, and I'm so grateful I got to work with such an amazing team of kind and talented people!

Cheers to 250 is open until March 2027, so if you're in the central PA area, definitely swing by the museum to check out this fascinating exhibit honoring the history of brewing beer in America.

Just when I'm taking a week to relax after turning in my exactly 35 page paper, I get sick. 😭 I must have been under a lot of stress. Lol
To make matters worse, the weather is gorgeous and perfect for gardening but I'm too weak to take advantage of it. 😮‍💨

On a positive note, I started working on my next podcast episode! Stay tuned! 😉

My brain is turning into a melted puddle and I'm ready for either a nap or mindlessly watching TV for five hours. 😂 I'm still working on my final paper that's due today and I'm nearly done! It's going to be 34-35 pages long which is right within the required page length. 🫠

I've got this! 💪🏽 Wish me luck!

Today I tried a 1943 recipe for "Pieplant Punch", aka Rhubarb Punch. It was delightfuly surprising! I'd make a few tweaks but otherwise, very refreshing!

Also, I just wanted to take a moment to appreciate this adorable orange juice pitcher and glasses set I found antiquing last year. It's the first time I've been able to use them. The sizes are just so small and cute! 😍 The pitcher only holds about 3 cups. 😂

The punch recipe will be up on Substack for my paid subscribers soon, but I've got another "pieplant" recipe in the works I'll be sharing with everyone!

I've made this wartime recipe for Tamale Pie Special multiple times for dinner. One of the most astonishing things about this recipe is the inclusion of an entire clove of garlic. This ingredient is so rare in mainstream American cookbooks of the time because garlic was considered an "offensive smell" on the breath. Garlic is definitely strong, but the flavor is, of course, worth it! 😄 It's pretty cool that this cookbook didn't shy away from it!

I like adding in other things I have on hand like spinach, fresh or canned diced tomatoes, and black beans. Yum!

The recipe comes from Coupon Cookery, 1943.

I love the cover of 's new book about the Canadian Women's Land Army!

Plus I just wanted to give all the love to her beautiful footnotes. I know how hard she worked on these and they deserve their own recognition!

Excellent footnotes make the work of future historians so much easier! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 (Take this from someone who yells at books with terrible footnotes. 😂)

I went to the Gettysburg Flea on Saturday and came home with the coolest find of the year: a fruit picking bucket! It was the craziest low price to the point where I did a double take. 🤯 Caspian was intensely interested in it the moment I brought it home. 😂

The bucket is made of metal with leather strap loops, a type of felt material lining the rim, leather flaps in the bottom to channel the fruit leaving the canvas collar on the bottom. Cotton ropes keep the canvas collar closed while the fruit is being gathered and woven cotton tape straps are attached to the leather loops for carrying the bucket.

This is a fantastic piece for talking about the Women's Land Army, citizens helping with the harvest or any other number of topics involving wartime crop harvests.

It seriously looks like it belongs in a museum. *Insert Indiana Jones meme here* What a fascinating artifact of food history! The National Park Peaches are a Pennsylvania brand but I need to do more research into the company.

We lost 7 chickens yesterday, we think to a fox. 😢 That is hard in and of itself, but most difficult of all is losing my gardening shovel buddy, Blizzard.

We got her as a chick during the pandemic in 2020, so she lived a good long life as chickens go.

She loved being in the garden with me to pick up worms and bugs as I dug around. If she saw me in the garden without her, she'd complain about not being let in. She was the sweetest, most unbothered chicken in the world. Orpingtons are one of the best chicken breeds and she was a prime example. I'm really going to miss her this gardening season. 😭

She's buried in the garden so she always be in the place she loved the most. 💔
