- The Sid Richardson Museum owns one of only three existing works painted by Russell, Edgar S. Paxson (also an artist and resident of Montana), and Russell’s close friend and first serious dealer Charles “Dutch” Schatzlein – owner of the Schatzlein Paint Company in Butte, Montana.? [Indian Head] Completed in 1904, the watercolor is signed by all three men. Schatzlein contributed the hair, Paxson the head and neck, and Russell the Pendleton robe.

Here come the saucy riders,
Girls who are Texas born;
Who know the rhythm of riding
Over prairie sage and thorn
Watch how they cut and circle,
Canter and gallop and pace;
Each girl and horse united
In a flowing pulse of grace.
Surely such easy motion,
Free from strain or fear,
Comes only to those who are quickened

In 1907, Charlie Russell painted "Utica," also known as "A Quiet Day in Utica," a scene that is anything other than quiet.
Every figure in this painting is said to be identifiable, but today I want to focus on just one. In the doorway of the general store is the owner, Charles Lehman. Next to him on his right is an African American woman, Millie Ringgold, a freed slave and prospector in the area.
Millie Ringgold was a gold prospector, boarding house proprietor, and long-time resident of Yogo City, just down the road from Utica, Montana. How did this self-made businesswoman find her way to central Montana? Check out our blog to find out!
Millie in Montana - Sid Richardson Museum - Fort Worth, Texas In 1907, Charlie Russell painted Utica, also known as A Quiet Day in Utica, a scene that is anything other than quiet. This work was a commission by the Lehman family, who had owned the general store in Utica, Montana. By this point, the family had moved to Lewistown and were wanting their former cu...
: In 1927, after a few months of settling into their new home outside of L.A. in Alhambra, California, Vinnie and SRM artist Frank Tenney Johnson arranged a big studio party. Among their Hollywood guests was Mrs. Nancy Cooper Russell, a widow of only a four months and one week. The Johnson’s had been friends with Charlie before his death in 1926.

, SRM artist Peter Moran!
Like his famous brother, Thomas Moran, Peter was drawn to the West and traveled to that region on many sketching trips, resulting in paintings like "Indian Encampment," in the museum’s collection.
Happy Birthday, Peter Moran! - Sid Richardson Museum - Fort Worth, Texas Today is Peter Moran’s birthday. While his brother, Thomas Moran, has long been recognized as one of the premier painters of the American landscape, Peter Moran has received less attention, partly due to the lack of primary source material available. Like his brother, Peter was drawn to the West a...

One section of our current exhibit "Picturing the American West" highlights the roles of Plains Indian men and women, with many of the scenes depicting families moving camp or following the buffalo hunts. Though Charlie Russell painted these compositions over the turn of the century, their canvases portray a time period from long before. What was the reality of life in transition in the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries?
Join us for the next Tall Tales as we read and discuss Zitkála-Šá’s collection of essays in "American Indian Stories." Please read the selected book prior to the program.
Lakota for “Red Bird,” Zitkála-Šá was an influential Native American activist of the 20th century and co-founder of the National Council of American Indians in 1926. Writing for white audiences in the early 1900s, Zitkála-Šá’s American Indian Stories combines childhood reflections and the hardships endured in Indian boarding schools along with stories of allegorical fiction, revealing tensions between tradition and assimilation that characterizes much of her work.
