LEARN SLIDE GUITAR IN ONE LONG LESSON

The basics of playing slide guitar are very simple when they are presented in a well thought out, systematic way by an experienced teacher. In just a few hours you can learn all the basics.

I've been teaching 46 years, taught in music stores, these days private lessons. I've had a lot of people come to me who wanted to learn slide guitar and walk away very happy with what they've learned.

Primarily we're going to play in open tuning. If you're not familiar with that don't worry, you will be. I do also cover playing slide for lead guitar in regular tuning, and we'll talk about what the best set up your guitar is for slide. You won't need to go to a shop, there are some very simple things.

I also offer mini courses for
Singer-songwriters
Lead Guitar
Theory
Picking Technique
And various other topics

Of course I'm happy to teach regular students who want to learn all the different aspects of guitar

If you've been wanting to learn slide
you can message me on Facebook or
text or call my voicemail

and I'll get back to you

A poem i wrote 30 years ago
---
Naked Pagan

A naked pagan
dancing with the sky
I am alien in your world

Your houses, factories, TV sets
It is difficult for me to understand
how can you live this way?
but you do

i need trees, grass, sky
Rushing rivers and willing consorts
fresh strawberries picked from the ground

You tell me of vaccines, hospitals,
guaranteed food supply
heat in the winter

Yes, these are good things
when enjoyed properly
but why give up

the joy of feeling
the sun on your heart
the waves on your flesh
trances
the companionship of spirit

Why do you seem to lack
joy,contentment,fulfillment
serenity, and
integrity

You sell yourself to the highest bidder and
live in fear of not selling yourself
Why can you not find a way to have it all

If this technology is so wonderful
why are so many unhappy
sick at heart
filled with all manner of diseased emotions and
homeless in the streets

I don’t understand

The gifts I offer
you think worthless

I offer the sand, the sea
the earth, the sky
compassion
and deep feelings

What you want from me is to be a robot
For that I may earn enough to buy food and pay rent
since you have set a price on every inch of the earth
by what right do you control this land

I don’t understand
but, after all
I am only

A naked pagan

Play Songs or Play Recordings?

I'm not trying to come to any conclusions in this piece, just trying to do an analysis of something we all face.
---

Ultimately anyone who plays cover songs falls somewhere on the continuum between the poles of playing the song totally your own way and doing as close to a carbon copy of the original recording as you can.

The considerations are the temperament of the musicians and the practical considerations of getting booked and what we think an audience wants and will accept.

Many musicians find great satisfaction playing as close to the original as possible. Others would like to have more latitude with the songs they play but often feel constrained by believing they need to play as close to the original recordings as possible in order to get gigs and satisfy audiences. At what point is it still fun and at what point does it feel like just another job?

Do audiences expect and demand as close to note for note renditions of their favorite songs, the old phrase being "I know what I like and I like what I know", or are they willing to accept our own versions if they are good music, especially if they can feel the band enjoying themselves and the musicians are good at relating with the audience.

I had an experience many years ago where I was playing a Neil Young song and the comment I got was
"that didn't sound anything like the original but it was the best version of the song I've ever heard".
That comment has influenced the whole rest of my playing career, but in fairness most of that was on the West Coast which seems to have a different musical temperament than Indiana.

If we listen to live recordings of a lot of famous songs, especially artists from the '60s and 70s, we very often find that the artist played it a bit differently each time and often differently from the original recording. A lot of times they took what was originally a three or four minute recording and jammed it out for 10 or more minutes.
