Fort Smith Public Schools

Stay safe everyone!

Tornado safe rooms at all FSPS elementary and junior high schools are important security resources for students, staff and the community. Please help to ensure they continue to be places of safety for those who need shelter. The safe room guidelines are below. To find a safe room location near you, visit our website www.fortsmithschools.org and find the 'Safe Room Locations' tab under 'Our District".

GUIDELINES:
• Safe Room doors automatically unlock once the tornado sirens sound.

• During school hours, students and staff have priority for Safe Room occupancy. The community will be admitted once students have been sheltered.

• The Safe Room is open to the public only when a tornado warning has been issued or the sirens have sounded. Once the tornado warning is lifted, the Safe Room must be evacuated.

• Pets are only allowed in the Safe Room in an owner provided and airline approved carrier.

• Food and drink are not permitted in the shelter. Smoking or the use of to***co in any form is prohibited in Safe Rooms and on all school property in accordance with Arkansas law.

• Radios or music devices may only be used with individual earphones.

• Safe Room doors must remained closed at all times.

• Thank you for helping keep our community and students safe by following these guidelines!

City of Fort Smith, Arkansas - City Hall

Please be careful! DON’T GET SCAMMED!
Unfortunately, not everyone is honest. Make sure you ask around when getting quotes, ask for references and referrals, and do not pay until work is completed.

Samy

*BEWARE OF SCAMS* -- The City of Fort Smith wants to notify all residents to be aware of scams and individuals posing as reputable and qualified contractors. Yesterday’s storm damage may attract disreputable business people and individuals. Residents are asked to use these guidelines when hiring a contractor:

• Be cautious of anyone asking for money before doing any work.

• Do not pay for work that is not done or is not completed.

• Ask for references and CALL the references. Ask about quality of work, similarity of the work, and the contractor’s willingness to correct deficiencies.

• Be sure the contractor has a business license with the City of Fort Smith.

• Plumbers, electricians and heating/air conditioning contractors must have an additional license from the State of Arkansas.

• Building permits are required on all work to buildings. This includes roof repairs, siding, and interior work. Do not let a contractor start working without a building permit, and see that they get all required inspections from the City Department of Development Services. Call the City Office of Building Safety in Development Services if you have questions about permits or inspections.

• Always try to get a specific written agreement that specifies the work and how much money will be paid for the work and when the payments will be due.

• The Fort Smith Police Department advises citizens to always be cautious.

• Please call these City offices if you have questions. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., appropriate numbers are:

T H A N K Y O U!

To all that were able to come out and bowl - and to those that were unable to come out but donated. We had a great time and we hope you did, too. It’s not about the score, it’s about the fun. 😉

We had Bowlers that drove ALL THE WAY FROM TULSA to support the kids in our city. Thank you so much! You are so appreciated and I’ve made some new friends today. Can’t wait to bowl with you in your city.

Today, with the help of Midland Family Bowl and D&G Customs/The Bowlers Edge Pro Shop, we raised 💲1️⃣4️⃣4️⃣2️⃣ for Cops & Kids at Christmas.

This is amazing. Next stop, Cops & Kids at Christmas will be happening December 8th. Can’t wait to see the faces of the kids that you were able to help.

Keep in mind, donations are still being accepted. You can drop your donations off directly to the Fort Smith Fop or you can drop it off at our office, we’ll make sure to get it to the FS FOP.

Special thanks to Burger King for all your donations and Samantha Howard for your hard work. Thank you, JJ, for being our emcee. You did great!

Here are some highlights:
🎳 Chuck won the bowling ball donated by The Bowlers Edge, but donated it to a local high school bowler.
🎳 Chuck also won the tv donated by Samy Bowlin Agency, but he didn’t donate that back to anyone. 😂
🎳 Kim Thompson won the 50/50 raffle and donated some of her winnings back to Cops & Kids.
🎳 Several Bowlers won Farmers paraphernalia and Burger King coupons.
🎳 29 kids won because of you! From this fundraiser, 29 kids will get to have a little something at Christmas.

Hope to see more people joining us next year.

Great little tip!

If a pipe were to burst in your home and the only way to stop the water was to shut off your main water supply to your home would you be able to locate it quickly? A good majority of home owners don’t know where their main water shut off is. It’s better to take the time before a water loss happens to locate it! We have these handy Water Shut off tags that you can place on your main water shut off. It serves 2 purposes. 1- It makes you locate your main water shut off before a water issue happens. 2- It has our contact info easily accessible so that you can call us any time day or night to help get the water taken care of quickly before it wrecks havoc on your home! If you would be interested in one for your home, email us at [email protected] and we can set you one aside at one of our 3 office locations. Springdale, Fort Smith or Russellville!

We 💙 Our Local Heroes! Yet again, we were lucky enough to be in the presence of some more of our local hometown HEROES. This is some of the members of the Fort Smith FOP Lodge #39. You see them everyday - in their vehicles, taking their kids to school, walking their dogs, or grocery shopping. They are HEROES in disguise and they put their lives on the line each and every day to keep our city safe.

The FOP sponsors the Cops and Kids at Christmas event each year. One of the events they do to raise funds for that event is a bowling event at Midland Bowl. This year, it’ll be October 27th. Come join them and show your support for the FOP and the kids.

Special thanks to Sam’s Eatery for partnering up with us. The food was amazing, as always.

To Write Love On Her Arms

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, and National Su***de Prevention Week started September 9, 2018 continuing through Sunday, September 16th. Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

This is a story that I've never shared with anyone. 20 years ago, I wanted to commit su***de. I come from a very strict household that had very high expectations of me. I was a senior in high school and the path I was following was not the path my parents chose for me. I was the oldest of four and there was a lot of pressure put on me to be "perfect". But like a teenager, I wanted to rebel. I felt as if I could not do anything right. I disappointed my parents. I thought my siblings hated me for the outrage that my parents took out on them because of me. It was a very dark time for me. To get all of this out, I wrote a letter sharing my anger, frustrations, thoughts, and emotions. I hated myself because I couldn't be what my parents wanted me to be. I thought it would be best for my family if I were no longer here since I was such a disappointment in their lives. Luckily, my boyfriend, at the time, found that letter and confronted me. He forced me to sit down and talk to him about it. As hard as it was for me to say those things out loud, I know now, that it was just as hard for him to ask me about the letter. He saved my life. If it weren't for his patience and kind heart, who knows what would have happened. 20 years later, we are happily married and have two very smart and beautiful children.

My story ended with a "happily ever after", but there are so many that do not.

Recent numbers show Sebastian County averaged 16.3 su***des per 100,000 people from 2012-2016, while Crawford County averaged 21.1 su***des per 100,000 people, according to the National Center for Health Statiscs. In Oklahoma, LeFlore and Sequoya counties averaged 20.7 and 21.9 su***des per 100,000 people, respectively. (Su***de rates in Arkansas and Oklahoma for 2017 put the states at #10 and #8, respectively, in the number of su***des per 100,000 population, according to the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention.) The numbers don't take into account people who have suicidal thoughts or are on the verge of doing serious harm to themselves.
- Times Record, Posted Sep 9, 2018 at 12:01 AM

Here are some other stats:
* Su***de is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds globally.
* The su***de rate in the US has risen 25% in the last 20 years.
* In the past 10 years, su***de rates among young people ages 10-17 have increased by more than 70%.
* The Centers for Disease Contral reports that 121 Americans die by su***de each day, and 93 of those people are men. Research shows that the su***de rate for girls between 2007 and 2015 has doubled.
* The rate of su***de is four times greater for le***an, gay, and bisexual youth, and two times greater for questioning youth compared to straight youth.
* 40% of transgender adults have made a su***de attempt, and 92% of those attempts occurred before the age of 25.
* The Surgeon General reports people of color, both adults and children, are less likely than their white counterparts to receive needed mental health care.
* EVERY DAY IN AMERICA ALONE, 20 VETERANS DIE BY SU***DE.
- To Write Love On Her Arms www.twloha.com

These numbers are astounding.

How do we prevent su***de?
One way is to simply talk about it. Talk to friends, family, and/or co-workers about su***de. It could be that one conversation that saved their lives. It saved mine.

Don't be afraid to say "I love you". Sure, they know you do, but to hear it is another thing. LET THEM KNOW YOU LOVE THEM - SAY IT OUT LOUD.

Watch for warning signs. Some of them can include:
* Disturbed sleep patterns
* Anxiety, agitation
* Pulling away from friends and family
* Past attempts
* Extremely self-hating thoughts
* Feeling like they don't belong
* Hopelessness
* Rage and irritability
* Feeling trapped
* Increased use of alcohol or drugs
* Feeling that they are a burden to others
* Loss of interest in favorite activities - "nothing matters"
* Giving up on themselves
* Risk-taking behavior
* Suicidal thoughts, plans, actions
* Sudden mood changes for the better

The National Su***de Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), and their website also has an online chat feature. You can contact them anytime if you’re worried that you or someone you know may be in crisis.

There is a 24/7 Crisis Text Line available, where you can text trained crisis counselors. The text line is free and confidential and can be reached by texting “GO” TO 741741.

twloha.com TWLOHA is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and su***de.
