Home phones are going away.

They were staples in our homes for decades:
Your grandparents had them.
Your parents had them.
If you’re old enough, you’ve had them….but most of us don’t any longer.

Most home phones in use today are only there to serve a need other than daily talking to others. Some keep them as a backup to their cell phone. Many keep them just for their alarm systems to use to communicate to the central station. Many homeowners that still have a home phone don’t even know the phone number because they don’t use the phone.

Phone lines (POTS – Plain Ol Telephone Service) are becoming less and less reliable. Phone companies want to convert the copper that used to carry voice and start using it for internet. Since alarm digital dialers were engineered in the 1960s, many won’t communicate reliably over today’s phone service that go through several analog to digital and back to analog conversions.

If your alarm system is still using a phone line to communicate to the central station, please consider upgrading the technology to network or cellular communicators. Ideally, the system you use would use both network AND cellular. The cost to covert is small, and your return on investment would happen very quickly because you would no longer have to pay for the home phone service.

Want to learn more? We would be honored to speak with you about all the options a cellular/network communicator would allow, like using a smart phone app to arm/disarm your system.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that you have about two minutes from the time smoke is seen or smelled until you are incapacitated by that smoke and unable to evacuate your home. NFPA 72 A.29.2

Most residential fires occur between 11:00 pm and 7:00 am, common sleeping hours. You may be unaware of the smoldering fire until it is too late to escape.

Heat detectors and residential sprinkler systems may be ineffective in saving your life, as smoke is the number one killer during a fire….not heat.

NFPA also rates properly maintained smoke detector systems as having a higher reliability than smoke alarms (like those purchased at your favorite box store). Smoke detectors are 95% reliable versus smoke alarms at 88% reliable. – NFPA 72 A.29.4.3

Guard Tronic can provide a smoke detector warning system to alert you when smoke is detected. Even in homes with those with hearing or vision impairments. In addition to waking you, we can also alert the local fire department and initiate emergency responders to help fight the fire more quickly. Because of the efficiency and reliability of smoke detector systems, your insurance company may also give you a discount, helping pay for the installation and monitoring of the system. Residential smoke detection systems may also be integrated into a burglary or robbery system to save money.

With many schools starting today, safety on the streets is on everyone’s mind.

If you are considering a camera system, it may be helpful to point a camera toward the street in front of your home. This may help law enforcement in case of an accident in front of the camera, or it may help catch someone driving by your home while leaving the scene of an accident or crime. This will also help ensure your children’s’ safety as they approach your home.

Interested in camera systems? We would be honored to speak with you about options.

Back to School is once again upon us! In preparing your children to go back to school, don’t forget their safety in returning home from school.

Do you know who your kids are brining home with them while you’re at work?

A camera system or doorbell camera will help you keep an eye on who is entering your home. Push notifications of your children arming and disarming the system will help you know when they are leaving or returning.

Access control readers have come a long way in a relatively short amount of time.

From inserting cards (like at an ATM) to long distance readers (like your turnpike toll tag) to the newest version of Bluetooth readers, we have installed and serviced all of them.

We are proud to introduce the newest Bluetooth reader that also has a proximity reader built in. If an employee still has a flip phone, or no phone, this reader still allows cards and key fobs, but also allows more advanced users to download an app and just wave their hand (with their phone in a reasonable proximity)….not their phone at the reader.

All of the credentials may be managed through the Virtual Keypad app or virtualkeypad.com.

We would love to talk to you about how to better secure your facility for less money.

We think we have one of the best-looking touchscreens in the electronic security market. It has an amazing amount of information at the touch of your finger.

As incredible as it is, you can use your security system and never have to use the keypad. You can use your Z-Wave lock to disarm your system and the Virtual Keypad app to arm your system, turn on/off lights, set your thermostat, and any number of other functions.

Your security system can be more than door contacts and motion detectors. We would love to discuss all of the options your system could provide if you chose us to be your security provider.

Fire Code Pop Quiz!

Can I add one smoke detector to my dental clinic and monitor it through my burglar alarm system?
a) Yes
b) No
c) It depends

“Burglar alarms are art. Fire alarms are science.” Fire alarm designers and technicians used to be taught that in our licensing courses. It meant that there were very few codes and standards applied to burglar alarm systems….but there were several that shall be followed when designing, installing, and servicing fire alarm systems.

Codes and standards establish a bare minimum level of protection to keep you safe. They have helped reduce the number of fire deaths from 4,500+ in 1984 to 3,704 in 2019 per FEMA. Failure to have a minimal fire alarm system leads to a false sense of security and leads to more injuries or deaths. Even if everyone makes it out alive, insurance underwriters may fail to cover claims if fire codes weren’t met.

Fire alarm systems MUST be installed to the adopted and referenced codes and standards. The answer to our question above is “No.” Installing a single smoke detector on a burglar alarm system does NOT meet any adopted or referenced codes and standards.
