Did you receive unemployment in 2020?

Good news!! If you paid taxes on your unemployment the IRS is reimbursing you those taxes, as many of you know. The IRS is finally starting to roll out some of the reimbursements. Previously, there was no way to check a date for these refunds, but you can now check your transcript at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript.
(Note: Not all transcripts are updated yet but they did just update and release a large batch.)

These refunds are subject to being offset to those who have past-due debts, like federal and state taxes, child support, student loans and unemployment benefits that were paid in error, according to the IRS.

These refunds will be reimbursed in the way you got your taxes, whether direct deposit, a prepaid card from a tax company, or paper check.

The IRS is set to begin advanced payments of the enhanced child tax credit (CTC) on July 15, and 88% of families with children in the U.S. will get the benefit automatically, the agency recently announced.

The enhanced credit, a component of President Joe Biden's American Rescue Plan (ARP), increases the existing tax benefit eligible families can receive from $2,000 up to $3,000 for kids between the ages of 6 and 17, and up to $3,600 for kids under 6.

The benefit is worth up to $300 per month for each qualifying dependent child under age 6 on December 31, 2021, and up to $250 for each child between the ages of 6 and 17 on December 31, 2021.

That means a family will receive a maximum of $3,600 for each kid under 6 for tax year 2021, and a maximum of $3,000 for older kids. An eligible family with a 3-year-old, a 6-year-old and a 17-year-old will receive an extra $800 each month from July through December, and another lump sum next tax season.

The IRS has the first payment scheduled for July 15. Subsequent payments will be made on the 15th of each month in 2021 (unless the 15th falls on the weekend or is a holiday). That means taxpayers will receive a maximum of $1,500 to $1,800 per qualifying child through the end of the year.

The IRS will release a portal to update information regarding this credit soon. You will also be able to opt out of the monthly payments on this portal as well.

IRS Projects Delivery Schedule for 2020 Tax Refunds & Tracking

With the processing of 2020 federal tax returns now underway, the IRS has issued information about the likely timetable for refunds to be issued. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

➡️ The IRS began processing returns on February 12, 2021.

➡️ The fastest way to receive your refund is to have your return filed electronically and request the refund by direct deposit to your bank account.

➡️ The IRS expects about 90% of taxpayers who file electronically with direct deposit to receive their refunds within 21 days, provided there are no problems with their returns.

➡️ Many taxpayers who file promptly and qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) will receive their refunds in early March.

➡️ Those who file paper returns and/or request their refunds by check may experience longer wait times for their refunds.

➡️ Refunds will also be delayed if the IRS must request additional information from taxpayers due to issues with their returns.

➡️ Typically, as soon as 24 hours after your federal return is e-filed, you may track the status of your refund by using the IRS Where's My Refund portal, at http://irs.gov/refunds. In many cases, the portal can provide a personalized refund delivery date.
