Weโ€™re taking advantage of winter break by building a covid-safe classroom. The A-frame roof will come down low enough to help protect us from the elements while also allowing fresh air to flow through.

They collected clay at the creek and they hauled it back to the fire, shaped it and used the fire to dry it out.

11/20/2020

Finger knitting has been a very popular activity lately. One of these knits we guessed was 100 feet long! The students have big plans to make each other gifts over our winter break and mail them to each other.

11/20/2020

This week was our last week before taking our winter break. We got lots of studying and art done!

Nothing but smiles on this wet day!

10/29/2020

Today we had our Dia de los Muertos celebration. We decorated the alter with marigolds, pumpkins, masks and our homemade lanterns. We wrote and drew about special people or animals that we cared about that weโ€™ve lost and shared with each other what we loved about them. We also did a scavenger hunt where they had to solve riddles in order to find their special treasure, then they left their treasures on the alter.

We also learned a new song/chant:
When I rise, let me rise. Like a bird, joyfully. And when I fall, let me fall. Like a leaf, gracefully. Without regret.

10/23/2020

We got our masks finished and started our fall lanterns. Next week is our day of the dead celebration theyโ€™ve been working so hard to prepare for!

We got the rest of the masks made!

Sight Words Bingo this morning.

10/19/2020

Preparing for our Day of the Dead celebration next week by making plaster masks. Theyโ€™re definitely a bit creepy so far!
During free time some of the students chose to play scrabble.

10/16/2020

This week we learned about millipedes and centipedes.
Some students learned about grouping and regrouping in math. We collected rocks and acorns to help with this math lesson and saw how well they responded to having a tactical and visual way to learn about this.

Some science, writing and math from today. We talked about where worms like to live and why, and then went looking for some. We noticed that they were harder to find today then they were yesterday and realized that was because today was much dryer out. Yesterday we learned that worms need to stay damp as that allows them to absorb oxygen through their skin to breath. Knowing we had to look in damp places definitely helped us find worms today!

10/12/2020

Today we started our earthworm study. The nice wet weather always brings out the best worms! We learned lots of different things, but one of our favorite things we learned was how much worms help the environment. We learned that their tunneling helps loosen the soil and their waste helps nourish the soil which helps plants grow, and how healthy plants then in turn help animals and humans. We also learned that during their tunneling they release pockets of carbon dioxide trapped in the soil. Last week, while studying trees, we learned how trees use carbon dioxide and release oxygen. It was so interesting to see the connection between trees and worms!

Did you know salamanders can shed their tails to deter predators? So cool!
