Happy birthday Books Galore!
For my friends at Books Galore:

Old pages turning like running feet
Each one full of new friends to greet

The smell of yellowed paper uplifts
Across these words my mind drifts

Soon I won't see the pages any longer
The images in my mind grow stronger

Tales of romance, adventure, or fear
Contrast with stories of laughter and cheer

I want to sit close to my dearest one
And flip the pages until this one is done
You there today

The Hobbit Habit: Reading “The Lord of the Rings”

The Hobbit Habit: Reading “The Lord of the Rings” “The Lord of the Rings” grew in the telling, but, more significantly, the reader grows in the reading; such is the source of Tolkien’s power, and it is weirder and more far-reaching than even he could have foretold.

Mystery Writers Set for Signing at Books Galore on Saturday July 24th from 10:30am to 1pm.

The two former journalists, who grew up in suburban St. Louis and now write mystery novels, will sit alongside each other for the first time in more than 45 years at a book signing set for Books Galore, 411 W. Main St. in Festus. The event is set for Saturday, July 24, from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

James R. Wilder and Mark H. Bliss embraced careers in journalism while working together at Southeast Missouri State University’s student newspaper, The Capaha Arrow, during the 1975/1976 school year. The two held the titles of editor and managing editor, respectively. Now retired from their newswriting careers, the two recently released mystery novels from different genres.

Foul Rising is Bliss’ first novel and is centered in the fictitious, present-day, river-city town of Elmwood, Mo. As flood waters rise in the city, which has many similarities to Cape Girardeau, so do tensions between city dwellers there and rural residents across the Big Muddy, where homes and farmland are being flooded. A recent murder, believed to be linked to this conflict, puts newspaper reporter Connor Tate and fellow reporter Rachel Short on a who-done-it trail to find the murderer.
Bliss is already at work on his second Elmwood Mystery novel.

Sheriff Without a Badge is Wilder’s third historical western novel in his Harbison Mystery Series of books. Taking place in the rural Grubville, Mo., and the surrounding Jefferson County, former Rough Rider Chet Harbison is thrown into a political fray when the part-time deputy is forced to run for sheriff after the current office holder suffers a debilitating heart attack. While Chet has adapted quickly to learning his law enforcement duties, adjusting to political pressures is a whole different matter. Soon after being elected, he discovers someone is trying to end his career and life. The race is on to find the would-be assassin before a bullet finds Chet.
