Below is a piece from Cecelia Rose Book Art, one of our small American businesses out of Marysville, Michigan. She takes her love of books and recycles the old pages with fun and inspirational quotes.

Beside Yoda, we have several of her works that add interest on a shelf or the wall for moms, dads, kids, dog lovers and Beatles lovers.

Everyone here is so kind and did amazing on this custom order wooden box with the painted jars and greenery as well as these candle sticks! I wasn’t sure what I wanted but they certainly created it!
Tried the Brickhouse Bourbon Whiskey coffee yesterday! Such a good flavor. Really enjoyed it even though I typically just drink black Folgers. Bold coffee taste with a hint of bourbon! Can’t wait to try the other flavors!

The packaging is beautiful and would be a great addition to a gift basket.

My teenage daughter and I made a special date around this coffee.

When I opened the package, we each breathed in it’s rich aroma. My daughter said, “It smells like a cute coffee shop!” And yes, it totally does!

After our first sip we both agreed that it tastes like it came from a cute coffee shop as well.

It is rich and smooth with just the right amount of flavoring. Strong enough to taste special, but not “perfumy”.

I’m enjoying this delicious tea today-Autumn Chai. It stands alone beautifully, but add a little honey and milk/cream and it tastes like dessert! Sooo rich and creamy, like a latte and I only added a tiny splash of dairy.

We had a little older couple in the store this week who were absolutely adorable in the love they showed to each other. Unfortunately, they are facing some very hard times over the next year, as one of them is been diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer.

The love shown to one another was overwhelming beautiful and when I learned of the illness, it stirred my soul and brought tears to my eyes. If he had not said anything, I would have never known as they both were smiling and full of life and love.

We each have our issues in this life. But even in those darkest times, we should remember we have no idea what others are going through.

Today, I ask everyone who sees this post to be gracious to everyone you meet. Smile. Hold a door. Give that extra minute to have a conversation with a stranger - or even someone you know. Love one another as beautifully as that couple. And just maybe we can make our little piece of this world brighter.

Love to you all. We'll see you next week.

We're working on updating several pieces for a customer. There are three of these identical small dressers, as well as a night stand and lingerie chest. The pieces dated from the late 50's-early 60's. Each have a nice film of cigarette smoke, as well as a few burns and other stains.

We're picturing the before and after of one dresser. Our customer wanted a simple soft white and gold hardware. After an intensive cleaning, we applied four coats of antique white milk paint from General Finishes and two coats of flat sealer, also General Finishes. The hardware has also been cleaned and sprayed with three coats of matte brushed brass.

It’s a shame the friendship of Jefferson and Adams fell apart but also comforting to know they reconciled before their deaths, which happened on the same day; July 4, 1826.

On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress declared America’s independence! Did you know that this vote actually occurred on July 2, not July 4?

“That these United Colonies are,” congressional delegates resolved, “and, of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British crown . . . .”

There would be no more attempts to reconcile with Great Britain.

John Adams was elated, and he thought that July 2 would be celebrated as a memorable day in American history. He wrote Abigail: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.”

Well, it didn’t quite work out that way, did it? ;) Instead, Americans have chosen to celebrate July 4 as our Independence Day. On that day, Congress finally approved a formal, written Declaration of Independence.

That Declaration was written by a committee of five men: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman. The five-man committee, in turn, had appointed a subcommittee—Jefferson and Adams—to come up with the initial draft.

Or, at least, that’s how Adams remembered it.

In 1822, Adams wrote a letter, explaining how Jefferson became the primary author of such an important document. His letter contains a blow-by-blow of a conversation that he remembered between the two men:

“Jefferson proposed to me to make the draught. I said, ‘l will not.’ ‘You should do it.’ ‘Oh! no.’ ‘Why will you not? You ought do it.’ ‘I will not.’ ‘Why?’ ‘Reasons enough.’ ‘What can be your reasons?’ ‘Reason first—You are a Virginian, and a Virginian ought to appear at the head of this business. Reason second—I am obnoxious, suspected, and unpopular. You are very much otherwise. Reason third—You can write ten times better than I can.’ ‘Well,’ said Jefferson, ‘if you are decided, I will do as well as I can.’”

In the same letter, Adams discussed the reasons that Jefferson, then relatively unknown, was appointed to the committee of five in the first place: “[Mr. Jefferson] brought with him a reputation for literature, science, and a happy talent at composition. . . . Though a silent member in Congress, he was so prompt, frank, explicit and decisive upon Committees . . . that he soon seized upon my heart, and upon this occasion I gave him my vote and did all in my power to procure the votes of others.”

Jefferson heard Adams’ rendition of events and didn’t quite agree!

The Committee, Jefferson wrote James Madison, “unanimously pressed on myself alone to undertake the draught. I consented; I drew it; but before I reported it to the committee, I communicated it separately to Dr. Franklin and mr. Adams requesting their corrections; because they were the two members of whose judgments and amendments I wished most to have the benefit . . . .”

So who was right? One historian suspects that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

“It could well be,” Pauline Maier concludes, “that the exchange Adams recalled between himself and Jefferson occurred as the committee debated who should be given responsibility for producing a draft—not later, within a sub-committee of two members.”

The story of our Declaration of Independence will continue in a few days. Until then, Happy 2nd of July!

From the only certified organic orchard in Texas, we present fine olive oils from Texas Hill Country Olive Company.

Our current inventory includes extra virgin oils with a smooth, buttery flavor to those with a bolder flavor and also infused oils.

It’s a Family Thing

When Michelle was young, she remembers coming home from school to find Nancy refinishing a piece of furniture she found at a garage sale. In those days, good antiques were cheap. Nancy stripped, sanded and stained until that old, ugly piece became beautiful once again. Now Nancy and Michelle work together to recreate the beauty of the swan from the ugly duckling.

Their passion has become multi-generational, as grandchildren of both Nancy and Michelle are often found at the store helping out.
