Written by David Tedeschi:
On September 11th, Farmington Rotarians hosted a First Responders appreciation event in observance of the 23rd anniversary of the terror attacks that forever changed New York City and the nation. Nearly 3,000 people were killed when al Qaeda hijackers crashed four jetliners into the twin towers, the Pentagon and a field in southwest Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001.
Farmington Rotary President Eddie Cunningham welcomed nearly 100 of local first responders representing the police, the fire department, including the Farmington UCONN campus, EMTs, dispatchers, and CERT team members among others to join club members for a hearty buffet breakfast at Farmington Gardens. Also attending were the Town Manager, members of the Town Council and other town dignitaries. Cunningham related a story on how he personally remembered the events of that day as his father worked for the NYCTransportation Department.
Then, at exactly 8:46 a.m., to mark the moment hijacked Flight 11 struck the North Tower, an official moment of silence was conducted by local police whereby all in attendance respectfully observed a time for reflection and prayer.
Farmington Rotarians give a special thanks to UCONN for once again serving as a sponsor and to Rotarian Kim Oliver who brought some of her staff from Arden Courts, a ProMedica Memory Care Community, to volunteer at the event.
