I am thrilled to announce a new development in my legal career: I am now trained in the collaborative divorce process!

While I love being in a courtroom and advocating for my clients, I am also keenly aware that often litigation and its uncertainties can leave families fractured and without long-term peace. The collaborative divorce process is a pledge between spouses or parents to resolve their matters without going to court (or threatening to take it to court). It's an opportunity for our clients to make choices about how to divorce with dignity, while working with mental health and financial professionals to ensure that both sides are secure and stable as they transition to the next phase of their life.

This weekend, the pups, Alex, and I participated in the Fairfax Law Foundation annual 5k Heroes vs Villains Run for Justice! Despite their mighty efforts, Copper and Penny were defeated by the distance, but Alex and I persevered, visiting such local haunts as our local voting station and the Other Side of The Neighborhood! There are always new "firsts" in the law. Today I argued for the first time in front of the Court of Appeals of Virginia! It was exhilarating and I look forward to my next opportunity to return!

Partner Tashina Gorgone just finished a virtual argument with the Court of Appeals of Virginia, where she argued cross-appeals on a very nuanced case. The technology went smoothly, demonstrating that our access to justice during these times is increasing as we navigate our “new normal.” Way to go!

I am so proud of my Firm, my colleagues, and yes, even a little bit of myself. 😉 While maintaining a practice during this pandemic has been a challenge, Maddox & Gerock, P.C. has handled it with grace and strength. I feel as though our client's access to us has barely been interrupted (if at all) and look forward to reuniting with everyone in person just as soon as it's safe to do so! These are strange times for us all, and while we have discussed the couples whose relationships are strained as a result of the current pandemic, it is wild to see the occasional exceptional circumstances that lead to divorced couples reuniting decades later. We had all wondered whether any stay-home or shelter-in-place order would address custody and visitation exchanges. The good news is, the Governor's Executive Order 55 clearly states that you may do "[t]raveling required by court order or to facilitate child custody, visitation, or child care."
