Did you know that today is National Christmas Lights Day?

Electric Christmas lights were first invented in the early 1800s, however, it wasn't until 1903, when General Electric began selling pre-assembled kits of Christmas lights that they gained popularity.

Here are some Christmas lights safety tips for this holiday season:

🎄 Check all your lights for broken or cracked bulbs, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections and toss any damaged sets
🎄 Never run extension cords under rugs or coil them tightly around themselves, this can cause them to overheat
🎄 Consider purchasing lights that come with a programmable timer to ensure no lights are accidentally left on, this will also help regulate energy use and reduce cost
🎄 Plug outdoor lights and decorations into "GFCI" grounding outlets
🎄 LED holiday lights use one-tenth of the energy of traditional lights, they're also cooler to the touch
