Special Olympics Virginia

Let’s get fit athletes! Our Fall Fitness Combine kicks off this week. Have you registered with your coach to participate?

"If you're a person with an intellectual disability, you are two times more likely to be obese or overweight and two times more likely to suffer from cardiovascular or heart disease. You are five times more likely to develop diabities and on the average a person with an intellectual disability dies 16 years younger than their non disabled peer."

The health and well-being of our athletes is our focus right now. Events like the Fall Fitness Combine are aimed to reverse those numbers and put our athletes on a better path.

You can learn more about the Fall Fitness Combine and how to register yourself or a fellow athlete by going to https://www.specialolympicsva.org/2020-fitness-combine.

Plus, if you register today you'll be entered to win a Special Olympics Virginia prize pack.

Please find our Fall Championships update below!

Important Fall Championship update: Based on information from experts, we have decided large-scale events that require overnight accommodations, more extensive travel arrangements and mass gatherings (such as meal operations) are not possible for 2020. As a result, Fall Championships will not occur in Virginia Beach this November.

Our staff recently shared information about the Fitness Combine, and we will focus our fall activities in this space. Where possible, smaller local and/or regional Fitness Combine events could occur in late fall, but we will be in contact with more details on those opportunities. For additional information regarding the Fitness Combine, please visit our Fitness Combine web page: https://www.specialolympicsva.org/2020-fitness-combine

Please find our return to activities update below for the upcoming fall season.

Return to Activity Updates from Special Olympics Virginia

June 29, 2020

The health and safety of our athletes and volunteers continue to be paramount. Special Olympics Virginia will adopt the Return to Activities (R2A) Plan as designed by Special Olympics Inc. In order to provide all the information necessary for safe return as well as appropriate volunteer and coach training opportunities, Special Olympics Virginia will begin the first phase of return to activities August 1, 2020.

In July, Area leadership, coaches and volunteers will receive the Return to Activities Plan and will be provided dates for training opportunities. The Return to Activities start date of August 1, 2020 includes any event (sports, fundraising or social) that involve athlete participation. Guidelines regarding fundraising events that do not include athletes also are being developed and will be shared soon.

We appreciate your patience as we work through this and look forward to having our athletes active again. If you have any questions, please contact Dave Pawlowski.
