HELP LOCAL RESTAURANTS - ORDER TAKE OUT!!!! If at all possible, please support your local independent restaurants by ordering take out as often as possible. They are not able to fill their tables because of COVID and are hurting financially. If you can, order directly from them and pick-up the food yourself. When you order from a delivery company, they take a big chunk out of the restaurant's profit. Don't forget to tip, fewer customers mean fewer tips for the workers.

Fairfax City Elf Hunt - Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday is coming up on Saturday, November 28 and we are once again rallying our city businesses to support our local business community by hosting the 2020 Fairfax City Elf Hunt but with a twist.

This year, we will be combining our Holiday Window Decorating Contest with our 2020 Fairfax City Elf Hunt by asking participating businesses to place their “Elf on the Shelf” in their storefront windows and decorate (as much or as little) with green, red, and white. Additionally, we will be including an online component to our community based approach by providing backlinks, information on how to support businesses, and highlighting specials/promotions you are offering.

To participate in our Fairfax City Elf Hunt, please email [email protected].

Here are two views of the same location in the Town/City of Fairfax taken 116 years apart.
The Sauls Brothers Grocery operated from this location from 1903 to 1926. The site was previously known as Whitehead's Merchantile. The building was partially destroyed by fire in 1914 when the photo on the left was taken. The photo came to me from my cousin, Gladys Sisson Buckley Potterton (1924-2019), whose grandparents owned and operated Sauls Brothers Grocery. Gladys' father, John Sisson (my great uncle), and partner Alan Williams, operated the Service Garage and Chevrolet dealership at this location from 1926 to 1952.
Jim McKay acquired the dealership in 1956 from Martin Logan and is still in business at University Drive and Fairfax Boulevard.

54th Annual Independence Day Celebration

Due to COVID-19 we are celebrating Independence Day a bit different this year with a Hometown Wave Parade!
Wear your RED, WHITE, and BLUE and wave your flags as the Hometown Wave Parade makes its way through the neighborhoods of the City of Fairfax on Saturday - July 4 beginning at 5:00 pm. Some of our local Super Heroes as well as Captain America, Black Panther, Spiderman, and Wonder Woman; hear the roar of the motorcycles of the Patriot Harley-Owners Group and the engines of the planes from the Flying Circus, along with some other patriotic surprises.
Uncle Sam on stilts (a usual parade participant) will be in Mosby Woods neighborhood, including Cambridge Station town-houses, on July 4th between 10:00 AM and 12:00 noon.
The parade will step off from the City Hall with the traditional flyover of the parade route by the Flying Circus Airshow.
The parade – with 10 entries – will visit all six city precincts (but not all streets) and will end at City Hall.
A Hometown Wave Parade Tracker will be active at 5 p.m. on July 4 on this website.

People are postponing travel plans, they are not spending their dollars on local restaurants or retail – and are canceling events left and right. This is wreaking havoc on small businesses. Ima...

The City of Fairfax and Victorian Square have seen a lot of changes in the last 50 years. The black and white aerial photo was taken in 1969 when the Massey building was being constructed to house the main seat of the Fairfax County Government. You can see the building going up in the background to the right. To accommodate a new Master Plan, the demotion of the Massey building was begun in May, 2019. We look forward to seeing what replaces this building. In 1969, Victorian Square was comprised of 10381 Main Street (the Sauls House), 10389 Main Street (the original commercial building), the Post Office (to the left of 10389), and the Service Garage (attached to the rear of 10389). The second aerial photo was taken in 2019 after Victorian Square went through two major renovations. 10381 Main Street is now navy blue, 10389 Main Street is red, the Post Office was demolished and replaced with a commercial addition 10387 Main Street which is yellow, and the original Service Garage was demolished and replaced with another commercial addition 4007 University Drive which is grey. The dynamics of the renovations, and most especially the new paint scheme, have brought a lot of life and vitality to Victorian Square and the City of Fairfax. As we celebrate the beginning of 2020, we look forward to seeing what new and exciting things will happen in the City of Fairfax and Victorian Square over the next 50 years.

The City of Fairfax has a long history of supporting the arts.
Since I manage Victorian Square, I chose a piece of art to donate to the property that also reflects what I love for the City's approval. Today, the long awaited Great Dane sculpture arrived. I am looking forward to it being permanently installed as this Dane needs a Christmas collar to celebrate the holidays. Many thanks to Dale Rogers and his associate Andrew of Dale Rogers Studio (Havermill, Massachusetts) for this wonderful piece. I know this Dane will bring smiles to a lot of people and be a wonderful ambassador for the City.
