“In the first six months of this year there have been 340 mass shootings resulting in 416 deaths. No surprise, then, if you’ve forgotten about the May 31, 2019, mass shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center.
But the families and friends of the 12 people who died and four who were wounded that day will never forget.
If individuals, companies and government bodies are not held accountable for gross negligence and incompetence, what hope is there for ending the carnage?
Until it is more profitable to prevent gun violence than to bear the costs of the aftermath, these rampages will continue to grow exponentially.”

THIS is my favorite Cameron Fairfax (7th Grade, 13) 🏀 story of Summer 2023! And, they actually LOST a close Championship Game! 🥈😎 (Must Watch Video!)
24 hours before this Championship Game ( #4 this summer), Cam’s left knee swole to double its normal size after another player had fallen on his leg the day before. Though fortunately 🙏🏿 there was no structural damage, he was having pain and trouble walking, running and jumping and he was prescribed to wear a knee brace.
He still REALLY wanted to play the next day and help his teammates. The Ortho Specialist said it was technically possible for him to walk (not jump or cut) a little bit, but said his mobility would be severely limited and strongly advised against it.
Cam immediately said with complete confidence and determination, “I am going to play tomorrow.”
And, play he did!🙌🏿🙌🏿. This 7th grade kid put on an unbelievable performance (taking off his knee brace halfway through the game 😳) against a very good and much deeper roster, fighting through pain and delivering on the offensive and defensive end. The guys even jumped out to a double-digit lead and led by 6 at half before coming up short by 7 at the end.
But, my FAVORITE part of the whole story was that Cam spent extra time after the game individually congratulating the players from the other team and lifting up his own great teammates with smiles and laughs.

Dr. Haroon Rashid, MD and Vista Medical Center Sued for $6.85 Million For Dr. Rashid’s Assault, Battery And Defamation Against African-American Woman Former Medical Assistant and Patient Whitney Grant
ARLINGTON, VA — Today, The Law Office of Justin E. Fairfax, PLLC filed a civil lawsuit on behalf of Medical Assistant Whitney Grant who was assaulted, battered, fired and later defamed by Dr. Haroon Rashid, MD of Arlington, Virginia.
In a shocking attack caught on video on May 10, 2023, Dr. Rashid exclaimed “I’m going to hit you!” to Ms. Grant and then assaulted and battered her in his Arlington, Virginia Vista Medical Center office during a workday in front of patients and employees.
In addition to serving as his employee, Ms. Grant was also a medical patient of Dr. Rashid at the time of the attack.
On July 5, 2023, Dr. Rashid pled “No Contest” to a charge of Assault and Battery against Ms. Grant. Hours later, Dr. Rashid — through his attorney Donna Biderman — defamed Ms. Grant on television with a malicious false statement.
Ms. Grant has suffered severe physical, psychological, emotional and financial damages as a result of Dr. Rashid’s inexcusable attack on her.
“No one should be attacked at work, traumatized, fired and then defamed,” said Grant’s attorney Justin E. Fairfax, Esq. “We will continue to fight for Ms. Grant and her family and work to ensure that no one else suffers such pain, trauma and injustice.”

Dr. Haroon Rashid and Attorney Donna Biderman Corrected on NBC4 After Lying in Attempt to Defame Black Female Employee Dr. Rashid Pled “No Contest” to Assaulting and Battering
ARLINGTON, VA — Yesterday, just hours after he pled “No Contest” in criminal court to Assault and Battery against his former Medical Assistant and patient, Ms. Whitney Grant, Dr. Haroon Rashid and his civil attorney Donna Biderman defamed Ms. Grant with an outrageous, fictional and evidence-free lie that his former Black female employee “was threatening to kill Dr. Rashid” on the date Dr. Rashid attacked her in his Vista Medical Center office located in Arlington, Virginia. Dr. Rashid’s attack was recorded on video and witnessed by several others. Attorney Donna Biderman stated a fabricated lie to millions of viewers during a television interview with NBC4 on July 5, 2023.
NBC4 cut Dr. Rashid’s false and defamatory statement made through his attorney Donna Biderman the second time it aired the story of Dr. Rashid’s “No Contest” Assault and Battery plea during its 6:30pm broadcast.
Also, as noted by NBC4 reporters on-air, there was no mention of any threats by Ms. Grant against Dr. Rashid in the May 10, 2023 Arlington County Police Report or at any other time in the two months since Dr. Rashid attacked Ms. Grant, as recorded on video. That is because Ms. Grant never threatened to kill Dr. Rashid. This was yet another defamatory lie by Dr. Rashid and his attorney Donna Biderman.
Ms. Grant will be filing a civil lawsuit against Dr. Rashid for his continued defamatory statements and abuse.
No one should be attacked at work, traumatized, wrongfully fired and then defamed. We will continue to pursue justice for Ms. Grant and her family.

“A Virginia doctor pleaded no contest to assault and battery of an employee Wednesday. Whitney Grant says her former boss, Dr. Haroon Rashid, assaulted her and prevented her from calling 911 after she asked him how to get an elderly patient onto an examination table for an EKG at Vista Medical Center in Arlington on May 10.
"And he said, ‘Well, I'm not going to do it,' and I said, 'OK, well that's fine,' and he said, 'Don't argue with me!'” Grant said. “And I said, 'Well, I'm not arguing with you. I'm just trying to figure out how we can do this EKG for this patient.' And he just went into a rage."
“Balled up his fist and said, 'I am going to hit you,' and I was just in shock,” Grant said. “I couldn't believe that he was even talking to me like that."
Rashid was charged with two misdemeanors: assault and battery and preventing someone from calling 911.
He pleaded no contest to a plea deal dropping the charge of preventing a 911 call and deferring sentencing on the assault and battery for a year, during which he takes court-ordered anger management and completes community service.
Grant and her attorney said they're planning to file a civil lawsuit against Rashid.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 5, 2023
ARLINGTON, VA — Today in Arlington County General District Court, Dr. Haroon Rashid pled “No Contest” regarding a terrifying at-work assault and battery on my client, Ms. Whitney Grant, that took place in Dr. Rashid’s Vista Medical Center office on May 10, 2023.
Ms. Grant is a former employee and patient of Dr. Haroon Rashid.
Dr. Rashid’s “No Contest” plea is the first instance of accountability by Dr. Rashid for his violent and inexcusable attack on my client. Dr. Rashid’s out of control temper and outrageous and violent conduct were captured on video by Ms. Grant and witnessed by several other people, including waiting patients. A doctor’s office is the last place anyone would expect to be assaulted and battered, especially at the hands of the doctor himself. Others awaiting medical care who witnessed Dr. Rashid’s violent conduct recorded the event, called for emergency help or fled the office in fear.
No one should be treated the way my client Ms. Whitney Grant was treated in a doctor’s office or any place else. Dr. Rashid’s unexplained violent attack has caused Ms. Grant severe and lasting physical, psychological, financial and emotional harm.
Ms. Grant was present for today’s court proceeding. She will be filing a civil lawsuit related to the assault and battery charges to which Dr. Rashid pled “No Contest” today in criminal court.
We thank the Arlington County prosecutors for their quick work and attention in this matter.
Ms. Grant wants to ensure that no one else is attacked at work like she was by Dr. Rashid and that justice prevails in this matter.

In 2023, the Virginia General Assembly now has the opportunity to help 400+ surviving families of the May 31, 2019 mass shooting — the second-deadliest gun massacre in the Commonwealth’s history — finally heal. The $40M request is only .0005 of the $80B state budget and 0.01 of its $3.6B surplus.
Will we ignore these brave Virginia Families or to meet them?
“The town’s mayor testified before a Senate committee that nearly 1,200 people a day sought counseling at the local high school in the wake of the tragedy and that victim support specialists had warned “counseling will be needed by some forevermore.”
“Everyone who ran that day left different than they came,” Gutman reflected recently in her first interview since the attack. “They now have a burden they did not have previously … a fear that is visceral.”
The same could be said, she now realizes, of the many communities across the country that also are on that roster. So far this year, more than 330 other cities and towns have experienced a shooting in which four or more people were injured. Gutman wonders about the survivors and the resources available to help them heal, especially in places with far fewer resources than hers.
“We have to do better next time,” she said.
“The bottom line is, to suffer from something like this is a very isolating, lonely, terrifying, uncertain experience,” Gutman said. “But I am going to be okay.”
The ordeal is fueling her motivation to help others. She is worried about the strain of the carnage on medical providers and the collateral damage suffered within families, having witnessed the anxiety and survivor’s guilt in her own. She knows people in Highland Park who still look over their shoulders in grocery stores, places of worship and outdoor cafes. They think twice about the shoes they’re wearing in case they suddenly need to run.”

In Highland Park, a shooting survivor and her community are still healing Sheila Gutman, who a year later has yet to walk again, now grasps how deep the collective trauma is after a mass killing. "We have to do better," she says.

Absolutely Powerful.
“It is late, but not too late to do the right thing.”
“The city’s failures cost lives. Rather than investigate those failures and hold itself accountable, the city treated the tragedy like a public relations problem to be managed, promised victims’ families answers and support, then consistently failed to provide either.
But we know all we need to know to do the right thing now. We know the city owed its employees a safe workplace. We know the city clearly failed to provide that. We know the victims’ families and survivors have suffered incalculable costs due to that failure. And we know the city itself has done nothing to ease the burden of those costs.
Compared to recent news coverage of lawsuits against municipalities, it is clear the amount we are seeking from the General Assembly in support, $40 million total for 12 victims’ families and hundreds of survivors, is an extremely modest request given the scope of the tragedy and the number of people harmed. It is an outrage that we have been forced to request it from the commonwealth because the city has failed us as it failed our loved ones.
You can help end that ongoing injustice now. Urge the General Assembly to allocate the $40 million in requested funding to support the victims’ families and survivors of the Building 2 massacre.
It is late, but not too late to do the right thing.”

Hon. Fairfax spoke from the theme “Message of Freedom and Hope” as regards the Juneteenth holiday, named for the date in Texas on June 19, 1865 when the enslaved Texans learned they were free.
“We have always been free … God freed us,” he declared. “We must feel hope and encouragement in our history.”
The Juneteenth holiday is important, he said, because it reconnects us with our history.
Fairfax offered three takeaway points for an already “free people” to becoming “more free.” First, he said, thank God for the deliverance. Second, never go back to the place of not being free. And finally, free as many people as you can.
Fairfax told the story of his own family’s release from enslavement by the Simon Fairfax Family during that time in history. As he was preparing for his inauguration to become Virginia’s 41st Lieutenant Governor, his father gave him the “deed of freedom document” dated July 5, 1778 that spelled out the family’s freedom.

“We serve a God who cannot end a story on cruelty.”
With his family persevering through the slavery despite insurmountable odds, Fairfax expressed their struggle is best surmised by a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s 1968 “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution” speech: “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it [ultimately] bends toward justice.”
Holding on to the rod of justice, Fairfax has been busy pursuing his passion and serving Virginians since leaving office in 2022.
“I’m an attorney here in Fairfax County,” he said. “I’m getting to pursue justice for people in the very same place where my family suffered the ultimate injustice and that in and of itself is incredibly inspiring and motivating for me.”
As Fairfax prepares to celebrate Juneteenth, he recognizes that the unfolding of his history could not have been orchestrated. He views the revelation of the last few years as “divine in many ways.” For this, Fairfax hopes his story serves as a “beacon of hope and optimism” for Viginians and the country.
“To remind everyone that you can go through incredibly trying and treacherous times and also find a way to heal, be elevated, and be better off coming out of it,” he said.
www.FairfaxLawPLLC.com
Former Lt. Governor hopes that family history inspires healing and optimism Former Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax recently tweeted about the historical documents that trace his lineage from slavery to emancipation just in time for Juneteenth.

2023. This must finally be the year for Justice and Support for the 400+ surviving families of the second-deadliest mass shooting in Virginia history:
“They’ve been set up to fail,” said former Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who attended Wednesday’s meeting and has been representing victims’ family members in a push for compensation from the commonwealth. “The commission itself has been incredibly disappointing in getting the truth for these families.”
Fairfax is trying to persuade legislators to approve a $40 million fund that will provide $25 million for the victims’ families and $15 million for more than 400 surviving city employees affected by the mass shooting.
Several family members of the victims attended the meeting.
Matthew Gayle, whose mother, Mary Louise Gayle, was killed in the shooting, reminded commission members about the lack of police presence and security personnel in Building 2, and the police officers inability to access certain areas.
Gayle said while the commission is short on investigative powers, it should use its influence to encourage legislators to compensate the families left behind.
