The Virginia Consortium on the Rhetoric of Health and Medicine (VCRHM) convened their second annual Colloquium at James Madison University on April 18-19, 2019. This second colloquium gave VCRHM members an opportunity to continue to plan and pursue a multi-site project related to rhetoric and the opioid crisis in the Commonwealth.
Similar to the inaugural colloquium (https://4va.gmu.edu/moving-virginia-healthcare-forward-through-effective-communication/) held in 2018 at Mason, academic leaders from JMU and VT -- along with those at Mason -- participated in person at the Colloquium, while several other leaders in the field participated virtually via telepresence technology.
Following on the first Colloquium at Mason, the participants at the 2019 meeting Identified primary areas of research, articulated research questions, and made research assignments for the next two stages of planned outcomes, which includes a conference panel proposal. Additionally, the VCRHM members assembled into preliminary teams for qualitative research program plans and began planning for the 2020 colloquium, which will be held at Virginia Tech in June 2020.

Extra, Extra! Read all about it!
The George just featured the announcement of our recent round of Collaborative Research Grants:

The Virginia Assessment Group, representing higher education assessment professionals from around the Commonwealth, wanted to host an all-day workshop providing critical training on best practices in data collection, analysis, and reporting for their colleagues statewide. Plus they wanted to include presentations from some of the country’s top leaders in the field. Their challenge? Make this workshop available not just those higher-ed assessment professionals from well-heeled schools or those with a travel budget, but to all their colleagues from community colleges or those in remote areas of the state. Their solution? A grant from 4-VA and access to the six 4-VA schools and their telepresence room technology. Their results? An instant success. Innovative Education

These ideals form the strong foundation that is 4-VA, a statewide initiative designed to encourage shared resources and cutting-edge thinking in support of furthering higher education in Virginia.

Together, we are stronger. The relationships we’ve built with our partner schools – James Madison University, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Tech – bring valuable assets to bear on the challenges and opportunities facing the state University system. In the Venn diagram of 4-VA, each school leverages its unique strengths and resources to advance a shared goal. Combining the technological resources from one campus with the rich historical archives on another and the engineering expertise through a third can more effectively accelerate the pace of change and in the production of a final product than each working independently.
