Don’t miss the opportunity to attend the final Visiting Filmmakers Series event of the semester!

This Thursday at 2:30pm, we will virtually welcome renowned artist and curator Astria Suparak, who will ask the question: “What does it mean when so many white filmmakers envision futures inflected by Asian culture, but devoid of actual Asian people?”

Part critical analysis, part reflective essay and sprinkled throughout with humor, justified anger, and acerbic observations, this one-hour illustrated lecture examines over fifty years of American science fiction cinema through the lens of Asian appropriation and whitewashing. Using a wide interpretation of “Asian” to reflect current and historical geopolitical trends and self-definitions (inclusive of East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia, North Africa, and the Pacific Islands — the latter two of which are not Asia), this biting critique examines how Asian cultures have been mixed and matched, contrasted against, and conflated with each other, often creating a fungible “Asianness” in futuristic sci-fi. A conversation with Astria Suparak will follow the lecture.

We are devastated to learn of the loss of Jason Cortez and our thoughts are with his family and friends, his wife Corina, and the many FAVS graduates who so loved their dear friend.
A gentle wit. A kind heart. While at George Mason, Jason Cortez made sure his friends felt loved and in return, he was loved by many.
Jason graduated from Film at Mason in 2015. He was a vital and generous member of the Film program, contributing to our community as student and alumnus. Jason was a member of the DKA Film Fraternity and supported the organization and members’ films during its early years. He worked on many award-winning student films. After graduation, as his professional career began in earnest, Jason frequently returned to campus to collaborate on and celebrate the work of other students.
As an artist at Mason, Jason took great joy in his craft, enthusiastically mentoring other makers. This joy was inspiring and generative. The Film at Mason faculty and staff send our profound sympathies to his family, his chosen family of friends and artistic partners -- many of whom are graduates of Film at Mason -- and his beloved wife and partner Corina Solorzano.
Please consider donating to his family's GoFundMe, to support their funeral and related costs in the coming days and weeks. https://www.gofundme.com/f/in-memory-of-jason-cortez
