We have been working hard on reviewing our system, policies and operations. The Fairfax City Parks and Recreation Department is among the city's most visible departments: everyone has enjoyed one of the city’s 25 public parks, walking trails, open spaces, recreational programs, cultural arts, and events.
It takes a well-trained and creative staff to develop and maintain beautiful, safe, and environmentally friendly open spaces. The city has committed resources to ongoing investments to create affordable, comprehensive, and amazing experiences that help build a sense of community and contributes to the well-being of individuals, families, and visitors.
Fairfax City Parks and Recreation staff are dedicated to creating programs: children’s camps, a vibrant senior center, and classes for all ages that offer educational enrichment, skill-building, and recreation. The staff’s stewardship develops and maintains beautiful, safe, and environmentally friendly public open spaces, prioritizing a healthy tree canopy and implementing best practices for the care of city green spaces.
Fairfax City is known for its events, such as the Chocolate Lovers Festival, Independence Day Celebration, Fall Festival, and Rock the Block, to name a few. The city also is known for its cultural arts events and activities: City of Fairfax Band Association concerts, theater, literature, and dance performances. These are all made possible by parks and recreation staff and their collaborative relationships with other city departments, and this helps grow and sustain the city’s economic development.
Tonight, Mayor Catherine Read declared July in the City of Fairfax. Receiving the proclamation were representatives of the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department: Cultural Arts Manager Megan DuBois, Special Events Assistant Manager Deanna Payne, Parks and Recreation Director Stacey Sommerfield, Event & Athletic Manager Mitzi Taylor, Recreation Manager Katie MacCammon, and Parks Manager Michael “Mac” Ryan.
