Please see below for more information on regional Car Free Day promotions from Commuter Connections and the opportunity to win more prizes.

Drop Your Car Keys for a Day!

Bicycle, Bus, Carpool/Vanpool (Car-Lite), Scooter, Telework, Train, or Walk/Run

Take the pledge, even if you’re already car free.

Car Free Day is a worldwide event that encourages greener methods of travel; meaning ways to get around other than driving alone by car. Commuter Connections hosts Car Free Day in the Washington, DC region to bring awareness to the benefits of travel options such as transit, bicycling and walking; and also telework for people who can work from home. Carpooling and vanpooling count too, we call that “car-lite” since they are both lighter on the wallet and the environment than driving alone in a car.

Reduce your Carbon Footprint
Using more sustainable ways to get around helps reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and traffic congestion. The more people who travel using bicycles, buses, trains, carpools and vanpools, the fewer pollutants are released into the atmosphere.

CHOOSE THE TRAVEL METHOD THAT FITS YOUR MOBILITY BEST, AND …….

Take the Pledge!
All are welcome to take the Car Free Day pledge whether you’re a Washington DC area resident, commuter, or student. Once you take the Online Pledge, we will automatically enter you into a raffle for all sorts of great prizes. Link to the Pledge can be found on the OmniRide BINGO card.

Parking and Traffic Advisory: Transportation Updates for the Fall Semester

As the Fall 2022 semester approaches, Mason students, faculty and staff are reminded that traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus greatly increases during the first few weeks of the semester. The following campus parking and transportation guide will help minimize potential parking and traffic delays.

A valid parking permit is required to park outside of visitor areas. Semester and short-term permits may be purchased online at parking.gmu.edu. Information about permit sales is posted on the Parking and Transportation website.

During the first few weeks of the semester, we suggest allowing an extra 30-45 minutes to arrive on campus. The Fairfax Campus has more than enough spaces to accommodate all vehicles. However, many General parking permit areas fill at peak class times.

A new ridesharing program called Mason Commutes is now available to help the Mason community find and share rides and to find carpool partners.

At times during the morning, late afternoon, and early evenings, campus police cadets will direct traffic around campus. Please be alert and follow the cadets’ directions.

Below is information about parking, shuttles, alternative transportation options, construction, and finding parking and transportation information.

Van Metre Garage Upgrades

New parking equipment is being installed in the Van Metre Hall Garage. The new parking equipment will utilize barcode validations which will be available through the Mason Square (Arlington) Parking Services Office. For those of you who have the previously issued white magnetic stripe validations, we will need to swap out these magnetic stripe validations that look like a parking ticket, for the new barcode validations.

In order to facilitate this swap to the new barcode validations, please contact us with the number of magnetic stripe validations you have in your possession broken down by validation type (one hour, two hours, etc.). We will then print out the corresponding barcode validations and schedule a time to make the exchange.

We expect the new parking equipment to be functional by June 13 when the parking gates will be operational and visitor parking will once again be charged for by credit card or with the new validations. Information to permit holders will be sent separately about using a new access device and/or barcode.

Please contact the Mason Square (Arlington) parking team at [email protected], (703)993-8146 or (703)993-7007.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

Mason Pond Deck Visitor Section Only Accepting ParkMobile for Payment During June

https://transportation.gmu.edu/mason-pond-deck-visitor-section-only-accepting-parkmobile-for-payment-during-june/

Through the month of June, the Mason Pond Deck will be undergoing a parking equipment replacement upgrade. For those using visitor validations, the new equipment once active by the end of June or early July will only be compatible with new printed validation barcodes which will be available at the Parking Services Office once a validation request has been completed. We will provide more information on how to swap the old validations you have purchased for the new barcode validations.

While the technology upgrades are being implemented this month, the visitor gates in Mason Pond Deck will be raised. The ONLY way in which one can pay for visitor parking is by utilizing the ParkMobile app. No validations can be used at Mason Pond Deck until the new equipment is functional. Once the new equipment is operational, visitors can use validations which your department have purchased or obtained by swapping out the old ones, or Visa and Mastercard at the pay stations and exit gates as before.

Meanwhile, your guests are welcome to park at the Shenandoah visitor section and use your existing white chaser ticket validations if you are intending to pay for their parking fees. Any white chaser ticket validations can be brought in to our office for replacement once printed barcodes to be used at Mason Pond once they are available. At some point in late summer, the Shenandoah visitor equipment and gates will be removed and there will be new parking pay stations which function like the ones in Rappahannock Deck, utilizing a validation code instead of the white chaser tickets. We will be in touch once we have more information about that process.

If you are a participant in our EV Charging Station program, you are welcome to park and charge your vehicle at the Mason Pond Charging Stations with your white chaser ticket ready to turn in to us upon exit. We apologize for the inconvenience.
