Youth smoking remains a significant public health problem in the U.S. and in Virginia. Associate Professor in the Department of Health Administration and Policy Hong Xue is continuing his study of youth smoking and prevention with a new three-year study.
With a $450,000 grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, he and his team will study the effects of policy and prevention strategies on the use of conventional and e-cigarettes in Virginia youth through novel simulation modeling.

Though CDC's Health People 2020 goals for breastfeeding were met nationally, the goals were not met by the Black subgroup.
A new study from Amira Roess in the Department of Global and Community Health found that combining Black racial groups hides health disparities in breastfeeding. She studied differences in breastfeeding initiation between African Americans and Black immigrants enrolled in the Washington, D.C. WIC supplemental nutrition program.

Maria Uriyo, assistant professor in the Department of Health Administration and Policy and co-founder of Abacus Robotics, recently led a five-member high school robotics team, IronMechs, through a 2-day competition against 56 high school teams. The competition required the team to compete in 8 qualification matches. IronMechs advanced to Round 16.

Brady chairs the International Collaboration of PeriAnesthesia Nurses, a global nonprofit that supports and trains nurses worldwide on the practice of PeriAnesthesia care. As the Chair, she incorporates multicultural viewpoints she acquired from years of international travel with the skills she developed at Mason to advocate for more training and resources for nurses who live in areas that do not recognize the nursing specialty area of PeriAnesthesia.

Dr. Scafide’s ALS technology helps identify hard-to-see bruising in darker skin tones, where it may be otherwise difficult or impossible to detect.

Julia Mandeville, a Public Health PhD student in the College of Health and Human Services and the co-founder of the Barbados Association of Endometriosis and PCOS, focuses her research and advocacy on improving health equity and reproductive health issues. Today Show recently featured Mandeville, where she explained the discrepancy in endometriosis diagnosis rates for women of color, specifically Black women, in relation to their White counterparts.
