Managing mental health during the holidays can be particularly difficult. Being surrounded by cheeriness can be stigmatizing when you don’t feel the same level of enthusiasm as others.

According to NAMI, 64% of individuals living with mental illness experience worsening symptoms around the holiday time. Here are some tips to alleviating feelings of isolation during these times. However, if you continue to feel overwhelmed or depressed, professional help is available.
Mental Health America offers free mental health screenings — one of the quickest and easiest ways to determine whether you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, are real, common and treatable. And recovery is possible. Self-screening can also be a helpful starting point to draft a list of themes and challenges you would like to cover in a session.

We honor the courage it takes to be vulnerable and the wisdom it takes to recognize when we need help. The nasty thing with mental illness is that it can trick us into participating in our own takedown - to get us to amplify compulsive, cyclical negative thoughts that serve no other function but to bring distraction and misery.

It is in these moments of mistrust within ourselves that we must reach out to others - to recalibrate our thinking, to deflect these impulses, and to reacquaint with the feelings of being cared for when we cannot provide it for ourselves.

"We often view therapy as medication. When we are sick we take medication to get better. However, what if we started viewing therapy as vitamins? We take vitamins as a precautionary measure to prevent physical illness. Mental health should be thought of in the same manner."

For those of us experiencing increased #stress during this season - especially with dealing with family, expectations, and 'showing up' - it's a good idea to start talking with your therapist about the holidays a few weeks before they happen.

When talking with your therapist, be honest with your concerns and give yourself time to prepare. For example, if you're concerned about judgement or receiving unwanted comments, come up with go-to responses in session. Role-play situations if that helps. If you are worried about your safety, come up with a plan to ensure you stay safe.

There are many ways in which we can work together to ease anxiety and cope with stress - for any time of the year ❄

Depression can take on a range of emotions - from sadness, to irritability, to feeling numb, or feeling emptiness (the lack of emotion and motivation altogether). We understand that it will be difficult to pick ourselves up from such a state - so if it seems intimidating, please reach out to friends, family, or mental health professionals for help along the way.

The Gratitude Jar 11/01/2021

The Gratitude Jar

Hello November! 'Tis the season for giving thanks - so why not start this the first of November?

Each day, try to find one thing that you appreciate or are thankful for, jot it down on a scrap of paper, and put it in a cup or glass. Practicing gratitude may seem trivial or impossible during challenging times - but this form of therapy is free and can be easily done, whenever, and at your own pace. This is a fantastically short form of mindfulness that can fit into any schedule!

'Tis the season for creatures and magic to come alive! We celebrate the season with this brief therapy exercise called "The Magic Wand Question."

It is good to visualize that ideal scenario –imagining how we can change our behavior and choices towards a different future, where a lot of the problems that are dragging us down are gone. This vision of a more positive future can help keep us motivated when times are tough – though it can be difficult to do this in a negative mood.

When it may feel like life is getting out of control - you may choose how to respond. Consult with our counselors about how we can cope with present situations – and hold hope towards the future!
