[04/19/17]   Did you miss the individual tax return filing deadline yesterday? File and pay as soon as possible to minimize any penalty and interest charges. Note: if you are due a refund there is no penalty for filing a late return. If you owe and can't pay the balance in full, pay as much as possible as soon as possible - then apply for a direct debit installment agreement with the IRS and make monthly payments for the balance. You'll be glad you did!

The new year brings new information and new deadlines! One of the biggest changes for 2017 is the filing date for Form 1099s. Businesses are now required to have these forms filed with the IRS by JANUARY 31. Penalties are steep: $30-$100 PER 1099. Intentional disregard adds a penalty of $250 PER 1099. Make sure that you have correct reporting numbers and addresses on file for your contractors. The IRS needs this information for matching to individual returns and is (apparently) not shy about charging the intentional disregard penalty to drive compliance. January 31 is only 22 days away - the time to get on it is now!

One of the greatest joys of the holiday season is the giving of gifts - to those we love and care about but also to those in need. Our favorite charities count on our giving heart - especially this time of year! You may be allowed to deduct that cash or non-cash gift on your tax return next April, but timing is important. We recommend that you mail a check to your charity no later than Dec 20 or charge it to your credit card no later than Dec 27. Why are these dates important? The charity must receive AND process your gift by Dec 31. Let's not cut it too close!

We know that keeping track of mileage is not your favorite thing to do, but it can be worth your time! The IRS just released the standard mileage rates for 2017 - medical & moving miles are 17 cents per mile, charitable miles are 14 cents and miles driven for business purposes is 53.5. That means for every 1,000 miles you drive for business you will get a $535 deduction! There are several apps that can make tracking miles easier. When it comes time to file your tax returns you will be glad you did. Pennies in the bucket can add up to real money!

If you are a business owner, you already know that income taxes are not the only taxes you pay. Business Tangible Property Taxes can be costly as well! This tax is calculated on business property that you have on hand on 12/31 every year. Now is a good time to review your property and equipment list (check the depreciation schedule from your business tax return) and make sure that you dispose of any equipment no longer in use BEFORE Jan 1. The time to start saving on next year's taxes begins now!

12/08/2016

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Companies throw holiday parties as a way of saying thank you to employees for their hard work all year. Great memories are about to be made! If the party is for the benefit of employees and families only, then the expenses are 100% deductible. Invite business associates and colleagues? That may change things. So haul out the holly, deck the halls and call your CPA!

Thinking about converting a traditional IRA to a Roth before the end of the year? It is expected that GOP tax reform next year will result in lower tax rates - affecting whether a Roth conversion pays off. If you expect your tax rate to be lower in retirement, tax-free payouts at that point are less advantageous. Consider waiting until 2017 to make the conversion. Already done a conversion in 2016? No worries! You have until Oct 16, 2017 to undo the conversion.

Ever wondered if you could pay a mortgage payment in advance and get a deduction for the interest on the current year's tax return? Tax law generally prohibits write-offs for prepaid interest but mortgage payments are actually made at the end of your occupancy period (unlike rent which you pay in advance). That means that your Jan 1 mortgage statement represents interest for the month of December making it eligible for a deduction if paid in the previous year. Don't cut it too close! Your payment must be POSTED by your lender by Dec 31 to be eligible.

I had such a great time at the Virginia Women's Business Conference last Friday. So many wonderful women entrepreneurs!! Thanks for asking me to be a speaker, Tina Johnson. Looking forward to next year's event already!

As we approach year end we are looking for opportunities to help you save taxes. If you are looking to accelerate write-offs this year and you make quarterly state and/or estimated tax payments, consider mailing your estimate due in January before Dec 31.This way you can claim the deduction on your 2016 tax return. This is easy one! As always, consult your tax adviser to make sure this works for you.
