2020 HONOREE: COVID-19 HERO

SHEPHERD'S CENTER OF FAIRFAX - BURKE & SOUTH COUNTY

The Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke (SCFB) is a nonprofit that helps older adults continue to live independently in their own homes. A variety of support services and enrichment programs are provided by older adult volunteers who use the knowledge and skills acquired over their lifetimes to offer assistance to their peers. SCFB provided uninterrupted AND free transportation to medical appointments and to grocery stores throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to older adults living independently in their own homes, and their volunteer service didn't stop there.

At the onset of the 'stay at home' orders, SCFB reached out to over 200 isolated older adults with weekly friendly phone calls ensuring help by maintaining a human connection and making sure they were safe in their homes. That initial outreach continues today - volunteers average over 50 hours per month checking in with clients.

SCFB pivoted to free on-line Zoom chair yoga classes open to anyone who wanted to join. Close to 100 participants log-in 3 times a week to join others maintaining their health and being physically active while staying at home. Keeping active both physically and mentally(learning how to use new technology), are key to living one’s best life.

SCFB's nomination form shared feedback from clients which stated "SCFB has been a lifesaver! Your volunteers always make me smile and I don't know what I'd do without you."

Join us December 18 to celebrate Shepherd's Center of Fairfax - Burke & South County for their selfless and caring service to the community and their innovation in finding ways to continue to stay connected and help others during the pandemic.

Find COVID-19 vaccine locations near you

Our Fairfax County Health Department has made great strides in vaccinating our population, with over 81% of residents 18 and up having received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose.

We are entering the next phase of vaccinations with booster shots and building capacity for future authorized groups - like children under 12 - to be able to get vaccinated as well.

Therefore, on Friday, October 8, a Community Vaccination Center, a large-scale COVID-19 vaccination clinic, will open at the former Lord & Taylor store at Tysons Corner Center.

This location will offer:

· First and second doses of both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
· Booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine to individuals seeking the Pfizer booster if 6 months have passed since their last Pfizer dose and they are eligible to receive vaccine booster.
· An additional dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines for individuals who are immunocompromised.

Of course, you can schedule an appointment anywhere in the County through vaccine.gov.

Find COVID-19 vaccine locations near you Vaccines.gov helps you find clinics, pharmacies, and other locations that offer COVID-19 vaccines in the United States.
