Reina is going to turn one and a half soon but its never too late to share her home birth video by the talented Angie Klaus This is especially meaningful because Reina's mom, Kumiko, also had her first baby with me but after a l.o.n.g labor together we went to the hospital for a beautiful birth with the wonderful Traci A Marin at Centerville OBGYN. So, this was my second birth with Kumiko and Ed but my first HOME birth with them, assisted by the fabulous Christine Kunkel
Someone is excited to see his midwives today!
We are fortunate to have so many home birth options in Northern Virginia. Please share this directory with those you know so that everyone can find the right midwife for them.

I am a Certified Nurse Midwife attending home births. I provide prenatal, postpartum, preconception, NFP, and well-woman care in my Fairfax City office.

I've known Annie and Jonathan for over a decade and almost got to be their midwife for baby number one. But life moved them away and I missed babies two, three, and four. But how sweet it was to have them back in VA for baby number five. Welcome, sweet Marie!

Getting to know these three big sisters and their mom over the months while we waited for baby Vivian was a real treat!. Congratulations all (and thanks, Dad, for snapping this sweet photo of your 5 princesses)!

Your planned home birth doesn't have to happen at home to make this midwife over-the-moon proud of you! You don't have to have a quick birth to make your mama over-the-moon in love with you, either. Sweet Joshua made his mom (and dad) work and work and work for more than 2 full days to get him here. After some hours laboring with Peter and then 24 hours laboring with her home birth team, we went to the hospital for another 24 hours of labor before this healthy baby was born. Few hospital birth teams would have had the patience to allow this birth to turn out so well, but we had the blessing of care from Dr. Hashemi and Katie Daily, CNM and you've never seen a prouder mom after she birthed this precious boy! Thank you, Teresa for not giving up! And thank you, Centreville OBGYN for being there for our amazing moms.

I watched that guy on the left be born at home when I was 14. He married the sweetest woman in the world who is now one of my most treasured friends. How lucky am I that they invited me (for the third time!) to be their midwife? Look at my sweet nephew, Rabun. Great job, Garrett and Juliana!

Caloy chose the one day of the month to be born that his Dad had to be away on a business trip. But Andrea didn't let that stop her from being positive and peaceful at her birth. Her kids all stepped up to help and support and Travis got to watch the labor and birth over facetime while waiting for his flight home. It was this family's second home birth and I was honored to serve them again.

Gotta love those second babies! Jenna and Ryan pulled out all the stops for sweet Evelyn's birth with me two summers ago and this time around, baby Wyatt needed no convincing it was time to be born! Thanks for waiting for your midwife to get there (barely). Jenna and Ryan, thank you SO much for inviting me back.

I had my last visit with James and his mom today. Thanks for letting me be your midwife! And thanks Jennifer Argueta for filling in for this special birth during a family vacation. It has been said “Midwives help people out,” but also, midwives help midwives out.

Once upon a time (five years ago), I attended a fabulous first birth—a little girl. This week, that little girl wanted to be the midwife at her sibling’s birth.
As you can see, she was up to the task.

I 💜 three-peat families!

"People had told me the third birth is a wild card! Even still, I must admit, I expected a speedy delivery and was caught off guard when our baby girl took her sweet time. While it was my most challenging labor, it was also my most beautiful and rewarding. The word TRUST sums up my experience. I trusted in my birth team’s expertise to guide us and use their wisdom to overcome each challenge presented to us. I trusted in my husband’s encouragement & physical support. And I trusted in my body, that if there were no health concerns, I could be patient. I could keep working in love to surrender to the process and bring my baby earth-side in our first home birth. She’s here and we are so grateful!"

"Welcome to the world Gianna Rose! Born at exactly 8lbs on July 9th at 12:24pm."

“After a long wait, and a fast 5 hour labor our Camila Joan was born in the calmness of home and directly into our arms on July 5th at 6:05pm; at exactly 42 weeks of gestation. Surrounded by a loving birth team, and a God-filled atmosphere we welcomed her earth-side to meet us and her older brother.”

A chiropractor and a pharmacist walk into a midwife’s office…
It’s not the start of a joke, it was the start of a beautiful home birth story for this beautiful girl, Arzanna. Rushna, I loved getting to know you and was so proud that you calmly persevered through two long nights to meet your first child. And Lavell, excellent support and encouragement. 💕

Not everyone comes to their 41+ week appointment still smiling, but I love it when clients trust that everything will happen in perfect time like Lyndsey did. A couple of hours later, labor started fast and strong. And as is the case for many first time moms, there was still a lot of work to go. Labor tub, fabulous doula Lacy, doula dog Daisy, ever present husband, laboring outside in a rainstorm, pushing in all the helpful positions in multiple locations until at last the most beautiful-faced child with the most amazingly molded head (back to round by the next day like they do) was born into the tearful and relieved arms of her ecstatic parents.

Surrounded by love! Christine and I were honored to support Marja and Killian as they became parents for the first time. Dakota was born in the birth pool in their living room and they’re doing a fantastic job through the transition to parenting. Fabulous doula support by Jackie Prescott

Home birth midwives often call it “the golden hour”. It’s our reminder that the very alert newborn and her very instinctual nursing reflexes are not to be interfered with as the family soaks in this priceless gift. The labor has ended. All is right with the world.
Weighing the baby, cutting the cord, doing an exam or footprints or medications…all that can wait. For now, get to know this new person.

Here are Maralize and Jesse getting to know Elise. Thank you so much for letting me be there to support you!

One of my great joys at work is when I get to bring my daughter to a birth with me. Several clients have hired her to care for their other children during the labor and here she and big brother are making a birthday cake. He was SO HAPPY that it turned out to be a little brother. Welcome, baby!

This is how our day started today. 😊 Michelle’s smile says it all. This was Kevin’s and her sixth baby but very FIRST home birth. ❤️ Welcome, Jack. I liked eating pancakes with your siblings today while you got to know your mom and dad. You’ve joined a fabulous bunch.

I don't always run to births wearing a dress, passing my next scheduled client in my driveway. But when I do, its for the best reasons! Sometimes, even the calmest of clients has that tone of voice that says, "this might be happening soon". I'm impressed with Matt for getting the tub filled in time. And, of course, I'm impressed with Jesseca for having another amazing home birth. Thanks for letting me be there. Welcome, Grahame!

"I want to catch my baby myself." I think it was at one of our first visits together that Lauren told me her plan. This was going to be her first home birth and there were several things she wanted to go differently than her first birth. Most midwives have abandoned the phrase "deliver a baby" in favor of "catch a baby" to signify our more passive role in the vast majority of births--to remind us that our work pales in comparison to the work of the birthing woman. But what about when we don't even "catch"? We are there to support, to monitor the wellbeing of mom and baby, and only rarely to intervene. Birth works. Thank you, Lauren and Dan for sharing your birth and this beautiful photo with us. photography by Lisa Phillips.

Iain's birth was such an important one for me. His mom, Betsy, was so strong through the disappointments of her first planned home birth with her water breaking when baby was preterm and breech. She had to give up on the home birth plan for that one. (Big brother Finn is wonderfully healthy!) And so she spent this pregnancy wondering if this birth would be her home birth. We all cheered when baby turned head down. We all rejoiced when she made it to 37 weeks gestation. And then we waited. And waited. For what felt (to Betsy) like an eternity. And finally labor started and it was an intense night. Morning came and there was an end in sight. At 8:28am we met Iain. Betsy, I'm SO proud of you! Invaluable support provided by Christine Kunkel (Birth Assistant extraordinaire, as always) and Kristyn M Gerchalk, doula.

This was our Monday night joy. Peter and Maddie welcomed their daughter just after 10pm in a beautiful home water birth. Big siblings Nolan and Sophia helped fill the birth tub and were excited to get back out of bed to meet their 9#3oz sister.

[04/08/21]   Monday night brought 2021’s biggest baby to date. 9#3oz. The title was only held for 48.5 hours and blown out of the water by last night’s baby. Bet you’re excited for this family to share their birth announcement. Stay tuned! Both moms made it look easy.

Our bodies can birth the babies our bodies can grow if we stay mobile, relaxed, and let labor unfold in it’s time.

It was so fun to get to know Abigail and Nathan as they waited to become parents for the first time. Labor surprised us by starting a couple weeks early on a Sunday morning, but Abigail was ready and did a perfect job taking the labor one step at a time, relaxing and resting as she could, letting her body do the work. Evening fell and we could tell that baby was coming soon. At 9:16, out came this perfect little one. "It's a girl!" They named her Sadie.
