It was a great week for Calderón Seguin PLC clients! We are happy to report that two of our clients were granted asylum. The first client was threatened with death and tortured by the MS-13 gang and police officers because he refused to smuggle drugs into local jails. The other client fled her country after suffering years of domestic violence without any protection from her government.

We also received a grant of a client's appeal, where the judge wrongfully denied him protection from torture. He is now entitled to a new hearing to present his case.

Great news before the weekend! Calderon Seguin will keep fighting for our immigrant clients.

Today CSPLC attorneys Ofelia Calderón, Anam Rahman, and Bri Carlson presented on panels at the American Immigration Lawyers Association DC Chapter Fall Conference. Ofelia, Anam, and Bri shared their expertise with conference attendees on the topics of removal proceedings, immigration court practice, prosecutorial discretion, and crimmigration.

CSPLC partner Anam Rahman Petit was recently quoted in an article by The Baltimore Banner about the problematic mass advancement of trial dates in our local immigration courts, often without proper notice.

"Anam Rahman, a Virginia immigration attorney and adjunct professor at Georgetown Law, said the changes are creating 'chaos' in the court system. Cases are getting reassigned to new judges, who each have different preferences on policy and procedure. Attorneys don’t know if they should appear for hearings online or in-person, or if they can expect to get extensions on deadlines for filing documents, Rahman said.

Preparing for a hearing can be time-consuming, she said. Attorneys have to request documents from other countries, hire experts who can testify about conditions in those faraway places, order psychological evaluations for their clients and prepare the individuals they represent — many of whom have been through traumatic experiences — to undergo grueling probes in court, where they will be asked to describe in detail sexual assaults, threats and violence, Rahman said.

The hearing rescheduling issue is affecting all types of immigration cases, she said, but the consequences could be especially dire for those seeking asylum.

“You could be deporting a client to their death if they don’t get the relief they require,” Rahman said."

Push to clear massive immigration court backlog ends up causing chaos for some Maryland clients, attorneys say The opening of new immigration courts and hiring of new judges — measures taken by the court system to address a massive backlog of cases — is contributing to confusion, attorneys say.

These calls are fraudulent; EOIR personnel do not call individuals regarding social security numbers or to request money. A student at American University is conducting a virtual information session on April 6, 2021 between 6-9 PM focusing on the citizenship process. The session will serve as an introduction to the citizenship process and everything it entails (application, interview, etc.). ANUNCIO SOBRE EL ESTATUS DE PROTECCIÓN TEMPORAL (TPS) PARA LOS VENEZOLANOS

El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS con sus siglas en ingles) ha designado a Venezuela al Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS con sus siglas en ingles) por 18 meses. Esta nueva designación de TPS para Venezuela permite que los nacionales venezolanos que residen actualmente en Estados Unidos presenten solicitudes iniciales para TPS, siempre que cumplan con los requisitos de elegibilidad.

ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING TEMPORARY PROTECTION STATUS (TPS) FOR VENEZUELANS

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has designated Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months. This new TPS designation for Venezuela allows Venezuelan nationals currently residing in the United States to submit initial applications for TPS, provided that they meet the eligibility requirements.

The 180-day registration period for eligible individuals to submit TPS applications begins March 9, 2021 and will remain in effect until September 5, 2021. Individuals applying for a work permit pursuant to their TPS application will receive a work permit with an expiration date of September 9, 2022 that is eligible for renewal if the Secretary extends TPS for Venezuela.
