Gabriel Epstein is an aviation student working toward becoming a commercial pilot. An ankle injury was about to put those dreams on hold before he came to physical therapy.
Gabriel's ankle injury prevented him from operating plane rudders with his feet and impacted his ability to get in and out of his plane.
Knowing that physical therapy would help him recover from his injury, Gabriel worked closely with his attentive care team for six weeks. He learned it would take time to heal and grew to understand the importance of doing his at-home exercises.
After working on his physical therapy regime, Gabriel has started to recover. "Without physical therapy, I wouldn't be able to perform daily tasks and physical activities as well as I can today," he said. "It has felt great."
Our Cape Girardeau team is looking forward to Gabriel flying overhead soon!

What is your favorite part of physical therapy?
Crop farmer Carl Stricker is no stranger to hard work. Farming is incredibly physical, and he needs to be as mobile as possible, so when his knee replacement became loose and needed a revision, Carl knew physical therapy was in his future.
With a recommendation from a former patient, Carl turned to Physical Therapist Jacob Pattengill and Physical Therapy Assistant Garret Alsup at our Cape Girardeau center. Carl quickly started to gain strength and increase his flexibility. "After several days of physical therapy and exercise, I felt much more comfortable and no longer needed the cane," he said.
Carl knew he hit a turning point when he could climb in and out of machinery again, a vital part of his job. "I have much less knee pain now," Carl said. With Jacob and Garret's encouragement and knowledge of knee replacements, Carl continues working toward eliminating his knee pain altogether.
"When the need arises for physical therapy for a member of my family or a friend, I will definitely refer them to Jacob at Select Physical Therapy," Carl said.
We're happy you're on the right path to recovery, Carl.
Ten years ago, Barb Jordan tore her meniscus and had it repaired; however, her knee was never the same. After years of being unable to bend or extend her knee fully, she decided enough was enough and chose to get a knee replacement.
After surgery, Barb needed support to finish her recovery. That's when she found Physical Therapist Shelli Herink and Physical Therapist Assistant Paige Ryan at our Toledo, IA center.
"The first day I walked into physical therapy, I just got that look and Shelli said, 'you are going to need a lot of work,'" Barb said.
When she started physical therapy, Barb had a walker and could barely get her knee to move. While it wasn't quick or easy progress, Barb was determined to get back on her bike without worries. She kept listening to Shelli and Paige, pushing herself through the hard moments to get over the hump.
"Shelli and Paige were a huge part of my recovery," Barb said. "I truly believe if I didn't have them, there is no way my knee extension would be zero [degrees]!"
While she found our center out of convenience, Barb said she quickly realized that we are the place for physical therapy and will refer to anyone looking for our services.
Thank you, Barb. We're honored to have helped you get back to your life.
