Unsupportive and harmful parenting causes incalculable human suffering and a colossal drain on resources that could be put to better uses. The solution? Obviously, it’s parenting education...a new kind that reaches everyone, everywhere, all the time.

Visit www.advancingparenting.org. Use a computer...our website is not optimized for phones. In our own unique way we are taking this approach to solving myriad problems that afflict children, families, and communities.

'Tis the season for favorite things! I started a little late - but we're just going to keep rolling :) Since #GivingTuesday was this week, I'm starting with my favorite non-profits and charitable organizations! Did you know that a percentage of our proceeds goes to one of these every month? It's one of my favorite things to calculate what that's going to be each month.
I'm listing them all here and then over the next couple days, I'll also share some particularly cool stories or initiatives from them that I think you'll love to know about!

The Court Appointed Special Advocate program was first established in 1977 by a Seattle judge who was concerned about making decisions on behalf of abused and neglected children without sufficient information to support his decisions. Out of his concern, Judge David Soukup conceived of the idea to use trained advocates to speak for the children in court. The Seattle program was such a success that

We have one last #FeelGoodFriday adoption success story of our own to celebrate #AdoptionAwarenessMonth!

Baby Fiona* entered foster care after testing positive for co***ne at birth. It was reported that her biological mother did not receive any prenatal care and was struggling with substance abuse issues. After spending a few weeks in a non-relative foster home, Fiona moved into the home of her maternal aunt who became a foster parent. According to the CASA, Fiona thrived in her care and was also cared for part-time by her maternal grandmother. The CASA advocated for early intervention and Fiona was found eligible for occupational therapy (OT) through the Infant Toddler Connection Program. She continues to have OT twice monthly for gross motor delays and is making good progress through therapy. Fiona has also started to attend daycare two days per week. She is a very happy and healthy toddler. Fiona’s biological mother signed an Entrustment Agreement that will allow for her maternal aunt to move forward with adoption to provide Fiona with a stable forever home. The CASA was able to maintain her visits throughout the COVID-19 health emergency and has seen Fiona thrive in her relative placement. Fiona’s adoption should be finalized soon and she will continue to have a deep connection to her biological family.

Here is another CASA Success Story celebrating #AdoptionAwarenessMonth in honor of #FeelGoodFriday!

Baby Hannah* came into care after being born substance exposed. She was placed in foster care immediately following her discharge from the hospital in November of 2019. Her foster parents had two other foster children residing in the home, including Hannah’s biological brother. Hannah is the youngest of 9 children, none of whom were in their biological mother’s care. Her mother struggles with untreated mental health issues and substance abuse issues. Hannah’s foster parents were in the process of adopting her older brother when she joined their home and have since adopted him. Hannah thrived in the foster home and was able to bond with her foster sister and biological brother. The CASA transitioned from in-person visits to video visits during the COVID-19 health emergency and was able to continuously “visit” with Hannah and see how she was progressing. Due to early intervention through the Infant Toddler Connection program, Hannah was referred to physical therapy (PT) to correct a right-side preference. Hannah recently graduated from PT in July because of the great strides she was able to make. She attends daycare full-time and her teachers report that she is doing very well there. In November of 2020, Hannah’s foster parents transitioned to being her pre-adoptive parents and the family has completed all the necessary paperwork to adopt Hannah. The family is just waiting on a judge’s signature to finalize her adoption. Hannah’s CASA has been with her since the beginning and is delighted that she has found a forever home that also includes her biological brother.

What I Wish I Had Known About Adopting An Older Child

"Adopting any child is a rollercoaster ride of unexpected ups and downs. And there is no way you can fully understand the level of patience and understanding until you are deep in it. But you have to be in it for the long haul, because at the very least an adopted kid should have a home where they feel loved, accepted and safe."

Thank You to Our Volunteers!

FY21 was a challenging year for all nonprofits. But thanks to the incredible and inspiring dedication of our CASA volunteers, our team was able to ensure that every single abused and neglected child in our community not only had a CASA advocate by their side, but they were able to grow, thrive, and celebrate their own successes throughout the year. We are so, so grateful to each and every CASA volunteer who stood steadfast alongside the children they served over the past year. Their dedication, compassion and positivity have provided a bright light during these dark times, making the world a more beautiful place. For all you have done and will continue to do, thank you.

In honor of #AdoptionAwarenessMonth, here is another one of our own adoption success stories for today's #FeelGoodFriday feature!

1-year-old Ryder* entered foster care after he was found wandering around a hotel, without supervision. His mother struggled with substance abuse and could not properly care for him. Ryder and his mother were traveling through Virginia when he was found at the hotel, so throughout the case, Ryder’s CASA provided important information to the court by contacting the out-of-state child welfare workers when his mother returned to her home. This case was challenging for all involved. While Ryder’s CASA recognized that his mother was not in a place to care for him, she was very empathetic toward his mother and strongly supported the relationship between mother and son. She advocated for visitation because there was a clear bond between them. About 4 months into the case, Ryder transitioned from a foster home into the home of a close family friend who resides close to his mother. This individual, who stepped up for Ryder, is very close with his mother and has been able to help maintain the relationship between Ryder and his mother, while being his full-time caretaker. Today, Ryder is a happy toddler who is developing perfectly. His adoptive mother and everyone involved in the case are extremely excited to see his adoption finalized by the end of this year.
