This powerful exhibit from Sacred Threads Quilts is on display at International Quilt Festival. It was an easy ‘YES’ when we were asked to sponsor it as the theme resonates with our mission of fostering a creative community. It’s all about our connections.
We aren’t traveling to Houston this year for Quilt Festival but we are happy be the sponsor for this exhibit from Sacred Threads Quilts to be there.
Our friends at Sacred Threads Quilts & Quilt Alliance had a virtual StoryShare this afternoon. Included was a number of quilters who shared their quilt stories which included a story of Judy Vincentz Gula sharing one of her own stories. Hear all the stories at https://quiltalliance.org/sacred-threads-quilt-storyshare/
Art quilt by Julie Ann Rush and shared by Sacred Threads Quilts represents the meaning of today's holiday and the emotion that art can reflect.

Thank you Sacred Threads Quilts for featuring my piece "Sisters of My Soul" on International Women's Day. "Every woman has her own voice, her own perspective, her own history, and her unique right to express herself freely while being connected in solidarity, patience, strength, courage, and love to others. Women are constantly surrounded and impacted by forces that move, and often, challenge them. In sisterhood and individually, each can breathe, notice, and choose how to respond to all that takes place in her life, as best she can, united in peace and sisterhood."
Stitchesnquilts used the new Silk Eyelash in an art quilt she is working on for Sacred Threads Quilts and said it was very easy toward with and the range of colors in one package was just what she needed to add texture to this piece.

We are proud to share that this beautiful art quilt, Eye Peace by Island Batik Designer Geraldine Wilkins of Living Water Quilter, LLC is going to be displayed at Virginia Quilt Museum! Geraldine made the quilt for one of last year's Ambassador challenges with Island Batik fabric and Aurifil thread.

"Eye Contact: Creating a Connection is about a proverb by Cicero. The eyes are the window of the soul is a variant form of the proverb. Eye Peace is about seeing if there is internal peace by gazing into the eyes. Looking into eyes is like using a microscope to view the soul."

If you're in Harrisonburg, Virginia, or planning to visit the city on July 15th, make sure to visit the Sacred Threads Quilts Eye Contact: Creating a Connection exhibition to see Geraldine's work and other featured quilts.

Sacred Threads Quilts will be holding the eleventh exhibit July 14-24, 2022. Hope to see you at our in-person at our exhibit. Sacred Threads is an exhibition of quilts exploring the subject themes of spirituality, joy, inspiration, peace/brotherhood, grief and healing.

This biennial exhibition was established to provide a safe venue for quilters who see their work as a connection to the sacred and/or as an expression of their spiritual journey. The objective is to create a dignified exhibition of artwork that touches on both spiritual and personal levels all those who view it. We want to share with others the experiences of quilters whose stories may be a source of healing and strength.

We are so looking forward to reviewing your entries for Sacred Threads 2022! This is not a judged show but it is juried in order to balance the number of quilts in the different categories. This year will be challenging as we expect more entries than ever and yet our committee will have to select fewer than in past exhibits to allow for social distancing in the maze we create as part of the overall in person experience. Find our more at Sacred Threads Call for Entry page at http://sacredthreadsquilts.com/cfe.html

Yesterday some of the volunteers behind Sacred Threads met at the The McLean Textile Gallery to see the work of one of the group. In addition to having Susan Lapham explain her inspiration for the beautiful quilts in ‘Exuberance in Cloth’ we were able to gather as a group for the first time in a very long time. And we even got in some discussion about Sacred Threads 2022.

"I Choose Joy"
Sacred Threads 2019 - Spirituality

This is the latest healing quilt that has been installed at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Radiation Oncology along with pieces from Backyard Escape 2020.

"Living each day with gratitude will brighten any path. Every day we have a choice, we can choose to look at the world with all its trials and heartache and only see black and white, or we can look at the world with al its color and gratitude and see joy. I choose joy!

At a time when life looked so bleak that I no longer wanted to live, I found refuge in nature and with my art. Rather than dwell on the past that engulfed me, I chose to embrace how strong I had become, resolved not to wither, but to shine. No unfamiliar path is easy: it's actually very scary. With a brave resolve to move forward, I learned so much on this journey.

I learned that trees seem to whisper wisdom and peace to all who will come and bask in the serenity they offer. I learned that by shifting my glance, I saw beauty instead of despair. I learned that God's love is in everything and offered everywhere you look if you choose to look with gratitude.

Look closely, and you will find a faint tulle silhouette, the outline of a soul traveling a path through the fires and choosing to see color while embracing joy."

There is still time to register for our virtual event. Registration at https://quiltalliance.org

On June 18th we are gathering virtually for a very special Sacred Threads event.
Since we can't be together this summer, we thought it would be wonderful to see each other virtually and continue to share our special stories around our most poignant quilts. We are partnering with the Quilt Alliance to gather and share our stories.

Join us on June 18th from 2:00-3:30 pm Eastern for a virtual gathering to share stories of joy, inspiration, spirituality, healing, grief and peace/brotherhood through quiltmaking. This will be a wonderful community screening of recorded quilt stories, and an interview with Sacred Threads curator Barb Hollinger.

Very important, in preparation for this event, we need your STORY. If you have a made a quilt that fits the Sacred Threads themes, we want to hear your story. It does not have to have been in a previous Sacred Threads exhibit.

All you need to do is record a three-minute video about it. You can film the video yourself (or with a family member or friend), or sign up for a Zoom appointment. We’ll share a selection of videos at our June 18th event, and feature the rest on a special website for the event. Sign up to share your story at https://quiltalliance.org/storyshare/

Join us for the virtual Sacred Threads Event.
Even if you don’t plan on sharing a quilt, you’ll want to attend our virtual event, Sacred Threads Quilt StoryShare on June 18th. Come enjoy inspiring stories and the emotional power of quilts with quiltmakers from all over.

Tickets are available for $10 for Quilt Alliance members, $15 for non-members. “Tellers” receive complimentary admission. Register at https://quiltalliance.org/storyshare/

Sacred Threads is passionate about the stories our artists share with their artwork. In partnership with the Quilt Alliance, an organization dedicated to capturing the stories of quilts and their makers, we are pleased to offer these wonderful stories from our artists.

Sacred Threads Quilts

In 1999 a small group of women gathered together with a vision of a "new" type of quilt exhibit. At that time topics such as spirituality and inspiration were not always understood or welcomed at traditional quilt shows, and all-medium liturgical art exhibits generally featured few if any quilts. There was no "safe" or welcoming venue for quilters who saw their works as a connection to the sacred and/or as an expression of their own spiritual journey. Often the meaning behind these works was missed or misunderstood because the artist did not have the opportunity to share their sources of inspiration with the viewer.

Founder Vikki Pignatelli and the other committee members wanted to create a dignified exhibit of artwork that would touch all those who viewed it on both spiritual and personal levels. We wanted to share the experiences of quilters whose stories would be a source of healing and strength for others by allowing the artist to submit a statement which would be exhibited with the artwork that described the meaning or inspiration for the piece.

In a hectic era when people are searching for meaning and spirituality in their busy lives, we felt this concept would be accepted and welcomed. Our hopes have been fully realized and each of the Sacred Threads Exhibits (in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017) has been well received. The show does not emphasize any particular religion or theology but conveys the spirituality, healing and inspirational messages that transcend all people.

For the exhibit, quilts are divided into categories based on theme. These are Expressions of Joy, Spirituality, Inspiration, Grief, Healing and Peace/Brotherhood. The artwork themes provide thought-provoking insights, encouragement, inspiration and healing responses to grief and human hardships. It has attracted a wide array of visitors and has proved appropriate for all ages from young teens to seniors. The exhibit is a positive influence on the human spirit, giving joy as well as addressing concerns of the soul and mind.
